Mitä teet

“Shoukouan: old Sono’s residence” was beloved by Mr. and Mrs Sono, who was the last owner of this house, a wealthy silk fabrics merchant, and absorbed into the lifestyle of tea ceremony.

As soon as you step into the house, you will be welcomed by gorgeous and sophisticated Japanese traditional architecture such as Kirizuma-roof, courtyard, an earthen floor, or safety treasure storage.

Before beginning our tea ceremony, I would like to explain the history of Matcha, with a focus of relationship with spiritual Zen method “Wa Kei Sei Jyaku “, why and how the tea ceremony was spread to people in Kanazawa, and some manners that I would like you to know as a guest.

First, I’ll show you a whole process to make a bowl of thin tea, which you have hardly seen, to find “Wa Kei Sei Jyaku” in it while tasting Japanese sweets.

As for tea, you can enjoy a bowl of tea that I serve as well as make your own tea and taste them.

I prepared the souvenirs (pictures provided): a tea bowl, a tea whisk, and Matcha(20g) which are selected by my favorite local supplier of utensils used in the way of tea.

If you are interested in those souvenirs, please let me know when you book.
Once I confirmed, Airbnb will charge you ¥5000 later.

I truly hope this experience will be unforgettable for you, and the souvenirs will remind you of the memories you made in beautiful Kanazawa!

I’m Tomomi, an instructor of the Way of Tea in Kanazawa, which once was a great castle town of the Kaga Domain Maeda Family.
They were instrumental in developing traditional Japanese high culture including the Way of Tea, and ordinary people here have been enjoyed it.

I’ve been living here, got some licenses at Ura Tea school and studied how to better explain and demonstrate it in English in Seattle, USA.

Now I would like to share it with foreign visitors in the real tea room “Shoukouan- old Sono’s residence” which is between famous Ohomicho Market and Kanazawa Castle and just in front of Ozaki Shrine.
Why don’t you come and experience it while you are here?

Missä tulette olemaan

You can take the bus which starts from the bus terminal No.8, 9, 10 at the Kenrokuen-guchi entrance of Kanazawa train station, and get off at the bus stop “Musashigatuji, Ohmicyo Market”.

Then, if you walk along the Main Street from Musashi to Korinbo, you should make left at the second cross point named “Kamizutumicyo”, and “Ozaki Shrine” is visible far from you.

It’s located on the left side of the second block.

We had a wonderful experience at The Way of Tea in Kanazawa. Tomomi is a lovely person, very welcoming and friendly, she speaks excellent English which was so helpful for us. Her manner and beautiful kimono were very special. The venue was gorgeous and Tomomi took time to show us around and explain about the architecture and use of the various rooms and gardens. The tea ceremony itself was very relaxed and Tomomi was happy to answer questions, whilst also bringing an air of tranquility and gentleness to the experience. Tomomi’s passion of ‘wa sei kei jaku’ and her love of the beautifully hand-crafted utensils was apparent throughout. The whole experience was joyful (I had been concerned that it may be too formal for us) and very special and we would thoroughly recommend it. We purchased the accessories and hope that we will use them back home to make tea for friends whilst remembering the lovely time we spent with Tomomi.

Tomomi was waiting outside the facility to greet us and was very welcoming. She explained all about the building and it’s history before starting the tea ceremony. The building was well kept and beautiful and Tomomi was very thorough in explaining why each step was performed and how to interact and appreciate each piece of the experience. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone searching for a casual tea experience with a fun and warm host.
