Towering sculptures dot the blazing landscape of the Mojave Desert. Weathered by wind and bleached by the sun, the larger-than-life assemblage art erected by the late Noah Purifoy has become an iconic yet ever-changing feature of the harsh, desert landscape that inspired it. Like Purifoy, artists, philosophers, and people from all walks of life have sought refuge, clarity, change, or perhaps simply broader horizons here in the Joshua Tree region. From the indigenous communities who have called the area home for thousands of years to the contemporary artists who flocked here escaping convention, the desert has offered a canvas for exploring questions big and small. Together, we’ll traverse the legendary landscape that’s supported creative endeavors both contemporary and historical—visiting colorful man-made mountains, mysteriously marked rocks, and storied sound baths along the way.
