Mitä teet

Walk and bike Chicago neighborhoods while exploring topics in Urban planning! Urban planning addresses a very broad variety of topics, it is the invisible thread that holds communities together. Some topics include: housing, sustainability, “placemaking”, biking and pedestrian infrastructure, and more! We will talk about all of these topics and get a chance to look at real life examples.

I’ll greet you at the Damen Blue Line “L” stop where we can begin our excursion by making introductions. From there, we can explore Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. We will walk around the neighborhood for about an hour before we hop on Divy (Chicago’s public bikes for rent) and head to the 606/Bloomingdale Trail and Park. This is an elevated bike and pedestrian trail that was formerly for trains, it's amazing!

Next we will explore urban planning treasures in the Logan Square neighborhood. We will see sites related to housing affordability, transportation, and urban planning history. We will see the City’s historic, yet hip, Logan Square neighborhood.

I’ll part ways at the Logan Square blue line stop. It is a different “L” stop than where we met, but I’ll make sure you feel comfortable going where you need to go!

I am passionate about urban planning and fascinated by how it shapes our lives and our communities. I earned a master’s degree in Urban Planning and am a nationally certified Planner (AICP). If you are a Planner and need CM credits, consider using this tour as self reported credits.

I have worked in various governmental and non-profit organizations related to urban planning for eight years and have lived in Chicago for over twelve years. I’m excited to share this experience with you!

Time and money well spent! I learned so much from Emily and it's clear that she is passionate about planning and related topics. She was a great guide and story-teller and tailored the conversation to our specific interests. My favorite way to visit new cities is to walk as much as possible and try to get a sense of the place, but having Emily to inform us of the backstory and politics surrounding neighborhood development added so much to my experience. I would recommend this tour to anyone even slightly interested in history, architecture, city planning, or transportation.

I would recommend to take this tour if you want to learn more about Chicago's different neighborhoods. Emily is very friendly and she is very knowledgeable about planning and the city. I felt very comfortable asking questions and I loved our tour. I even had a chance to try the 606 bike path. That was wonderful. I would highly recommend anyone to take the tour.

This was such a unique experience but also what I want to do every time I go to a new city: hear stories about the history and application of policies that shape the place. Emily offered an authentic perspective as a local planning professional and provided such valuable context on the neighborhood where I stayed. Learning about the boulevard system of Chicago, pedestrian and cycling policies, and transit oriented development helped to put a new lens on my surroundings. Then getting to actively participate by biking, walking, and taking in local businesses made the whole experience truly special. It was amazing to have an urban planner at my disposal for a few hours to ask as many questions as I wanted, Emily was knowledgeable, personable and welcoming. She made sure I was safe biking on the city streets, which I appreciated. I would definitely recommend this tour if you want a unique and personalized experience about the Windy City!

Emily gave us a great tour. We really enjoyed her insights (as a city planner) on street amenities like crosswalks, bike lanes and other things that we wouldn't have noticed or appreciated on our own. Loved walking and biking the route she choose.

Our experience with Emily was one of the highlights of our trip to Chicago! She took us through two neighborhoods and explained the history of each and explained recent urban planning efforts to improve intersections and pedestrian/biking connections and safety through both of them. She showed us many of the fun wall murals that exist in the areas that really helped us get a sense of the culture of the neighborhoods. Her trip was super well-organized to make the most of our time. Emily knew the best routes to walk and bike, including the amazing "606" elevated former rail line. She is super knowledgeable about fun places to visit and eat throughout the areas too. We had a great time!
