The Italianate style house was built in 1841. Out of a total of 11 rooms we rent out 3 - 4 bedrooms and a large double parlor living room, all on 2 floors with 2 hallways and your own private entrance. 2 queen size bedrooms and one bedroom with a full size bed plus 1 single bed are on the 2nd floor together with a full bathroom. The 4th bedroom with 2 single beds or a combined king size bed is on the first floor and is used to accommodate parties larger than 6 people. For groups of 7 or more guests we offer a second bathroom. An additional single size bed can be added to one bedroom and a large queen size air-mattress for the common/living room can be provided to accommodate groups of up to 11 guests. For events with 10 or more people we require a $500.- fully refundable security deposit. For events we charge an additional use fee depending on the size of the event and duration.
A special booking requirement applies for the Wesleyan graduation weekend in May of 2021. For this weekend, the Historic Mansion can only be booked for 6 guests and a 2 night minimum (an additional 7th person can be accommodated with a single real mattress on the floor of one of the bedrooms for an extra fee).

The rented part of the house will provide ample privacy for you. Our own private quarters are on the other far side of the house. We rent the 3 bedrooms upstairs to only one party at a time. 3 bedrooms have 3 windows each, 1 bedroom has 2 windows - the rooms have ample light with garden views all around. We serve a light breakfast in the morning.
The Spirit of 76 House is named after a mural on the west side facade. The House has been in our family since 1908 and we continue the tradition of hospitality and jovial country living. Enjoy the New England countryside in this charming estate situated on 4 acres of lawns gardens and open fields. We are located in the Connecticut River Valley in the village of Higganum.
Early English settlements in the Higganum area are documented since 1660. At that time the sachem or sovereign of the territory around Higganum was Towwehashque of the Wongunk tribe. In 1697 she was succeeded by her daughter Pampenum.
The surrounding areas are used for many recreational activities like biking, boating, fishing, swimming and hiking.
We are located in the center of Higganum, where you find 2 restaurants, a pizza place, pharmacy, hardware, and a grocery store. We are a 20 minute drive from the Connecticut shoreline and a 2 hour drive to either New York or Boston.

Vieraan pääsy
The downstairs double parlor living room which also has a TV and a Baby Grand piano is for guest use only.

Higganum, Connecticut, Yhdysvallat

Within a 5-10 minute walk from the Spiritof76 House lies the Higganum Reservoir, or, as the people of Higganum call it lovingly, THE RES.
The Higganum Reservoir gives us the pleasure of fishing, swimming and watching the local grey heron fly by.
Hours: Year-round, dawn to dusk, Free Access
Handicap Accessible: Fishing platform Founding Date: 2003
The original dam was constructed in 1868 by the 2 brothers George M. and Thomas J. Clark of the Higganum Manufacturing Company called the Clark Company. Their firm, later known as Clark Cutaway Harrow, was one of Higganum's most successful industries, produced an extensive line of farm equipment including 400 types of plows, disk harrows, cider presses, hay spreaders and carriage jacks. The factory, located at the site of the now empty Rossi lumberyard, was powered by water from the reservoir and Candlewood Hill and Bible Rock Brooks. The factory burned in the early 20th century but the dam and reservoir remained until its 2003 reconstruction as Higganum Reservoir State Park. The new dam is 20 feet high and has a walkway which allows you to gaze at the water rushing over an old stone spillway down into a beautiful clear brook.
Watershed Area: 6.6 Square Miles
Lake Area: 32 Acres
Higganum Reservoir State Park covers 137 acres. Meandering trails through the woods surrounding the lake are ideal for short hikes and mountain biking.
