Our A-Frame is a labor of our love and was built as such. A getaway to relax, hike and enjoy. Our place is quiet, rustic, rural and completely off the grid in nature. It borders Zion National Park and is only 140 feet from the East Rim Trailhead. Stargazing is stellar! You’ll love our place because of the location, the views, the ambiance, and the true outdoors space and memories. We bring the outdoors in and the indoors outside. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and friends.

The Space

Upon arrival, you will park your car along the dirt road in one of the pull-offs and you will follow a wood chip and solar lit (at night) trail down a small ravine across a bridge with a seasonal stream and up another small ravine (about 150 feet in total) that is lined with beautiful Ponderosa Pines. On your left are the wildflower meadow and two lounge chairs for stargazing with no trees blocking the view. The view is 180 degree of stars at night. You can watch shooting stars and the International Space Station pass overhead when in view as well as explore the stars with the telescope. As you follow the trail and come to the top of the hill you will see the hammock to the left and the closed A-frame. Past the hammock is a bench and a small trail to an open area where there are Horseshoes and a small storage shed with Giant Jenga and cornhole boards/bags. There is an Adirondack loveseat adjacent to the A-frame. Proceed to the right and you will put in your code to the keyless door lock. From there you can open the A-frame and have an inside/outside room.

Upon entering, you will notice that the natural sunlight is reflecting from the convertible wall and four other windows. Natural sunlight is everywhere. On the white storage cubes, you will find two binders: one is an A-frame manual with information about everything related to the A-frame, the bathroom, the BBQ area, and our property; the second binder has descriptions of different hikes you can take from the Stave Springs/East Rim Trailhead and other popular hikes as well as info on the surrounding area. Each one of the hikes has a map and a copy you can take with you in a sleeve within the book. There are games, coloring books, and cards located in a white cube and there is minimalist storage for your items as well as a luggage rack to keep the area clutter free for you.

If you open up the A-frame wall or go out the front door and walk across the deck to the BBQ bar to look inside the Yukon ice chest there you will see see a block of ice, drinking water, and condiments in the wet cooler. The dry cooler on the opposite side of the bar contains some Smore’s fixings as well as candy/snacks in the basket for you. If you are Vegan or Vegetarian and do not eat marshmallows, let us know in advance and we will provide Vegan Marshmallows or leave a banana to roast. If you explore the lower cabinet of the BBQ Bar you will find plates, cups, utensils, cookware, and everything you may need to fix any meal.

One of the greatest elements of this property is that it allows you to experience what off –grid living can be like with only minimal sacrifice. It has a solar system in place for the A-frame with an electrical outlet and a separate solar unit for the bathroom toilet. The natural light and convertible wall allows light to pour in and out and you can sleep with the wall open or shut. The water is from the local well and all water used is integrated to water the plants and trees. The special composting toilet allows for water conservation with no smell or mess common with a regular composting toilet.

We spent 5 months designing and building this A-frame to make it a home away from home and a small piece of paradise away from our busy lives. Our goal was to make a place of peace, relaxation, and bliss where our memories could harvest new experiences. We wanted a place to be in nature as much as possible and where hiking was outside our door; and now we are sharing it with you.

Now, stop and relax and breathe because this is what memories and vacations are about, not about the hustle and bustle of normal life. Sit in an Adirondack chair or patio chair that overlooks the ravine and wildflower meadow. If it tickles your fancy, relax and unwind in the hammock. Listen to the birds and wind rustle the trees. What you do on your vacation next is up to you.

PLEASE READ ALL ITEMS BEFORE BOOKING! Read the entire section before making the reservation. So there are no surprises.

You are in the Alpine wilderness and therefore you must have respect for it and be aware of a few items.

*Ravine: You park on the graveled pullout along the dirt road or at the National Park parking and walk 150 feet or so down and back up a ravine. So if you have a lot of heavy items it will give you a workout. Trust me, we had to lug everything from wood beams to towels and it is tiring after a lot of trips.

*Altitude/weather: you are at around 6,500 feet in elevation. If you have any heart problems and/or coming from sea level, you will notice a difference. The weather is also 9 to 13 degrees cooler than Zion National Park. Utah and Zion weather are unpredictable so bring warm and cool clothes. Layering is a must here if hiking. In the late summer/fall, there may be intermittent afternoon showers that last an hour or so. I love the afternoon showers because it gives me time to relax and enjoy the rainfall under the canopy of the convertible wall. It is all about perspective.

*Water: The running water is unfiltered well water, so drink at your own risk. We provide you with several bottles of drinking water and a jug of drinking water.

*Electricity: Solar Power is generated by sunlight and is stored in batteries. There is limited battery capacity that depends on the weather. If you leave lights on or the fan on, it can drain the batteries faster so be thoughtful when using the electricity. We have remote lights for the night as well as huge battery operated candles for evening ambiance. During the day the windows provide plenty of natural daylight.

*Critters: You are in the wilderness. There are a lot of alpine critters on our property including squirrels, foxes, bats, Mexican Spotted Owls, California Condors, Peregrine Falcons, Bald Eagles, ravens, eagles, deer, turkeys, bunnies, coyotes, cougars (the cougar is not in area presently and not presenting any danger) and Rams have been seen on the East Rim Trail and 15 feet from the property. Additionally, Black Bear do live in the area but are very rare and usually come down only in the wintertime. So ...use caution and enjoy the alpine animals from a distance. Additionally, Rattlesnakes can be present in Southern Utah, especially in the summer (they like the alpine cooler weather). Please use caution if you see one and DO NOT bother it.

*Bugs: You are in the wilderness and border two sides of the national park: there are lots of bugs that fly and crawl. There are spiders, moths, ants of all varieties, beetles, stump wasps, mosquitoes, black flies and horse flies. In Zion, I have heard of tarantulas and scorpions in some desert areas in the floor of the Zion Park (not usually in the alpine area). We have both natural and unnatural bug sprays at the A-frame but it never hurts to bring your own. We also have citronella tiki torches and sticks for mosquitoes but know that you are in nature at a remote location and therefore in a bug’s territory. There is not a large presence and we usually only notice a few at dusk. Bugs will be there regardless and most of the time not bothersome but know you will see some especially in a cabin that has a convertible wall.

*Noises: During the day or night you might hear the birds, coyotes, turkeys, squirrels, deer walking around or other critters going about their daily life. The road is 150 feet away but hardly any traffic due to the trailhead not being well known, yet becoming more popular every year. People and the ranch rent ATV’s so you can hear them if they come down the road. It can be very quiet or can sound like a melody when the wind blows through the leaves or the ratty tat of the rain hitting the metal roof. It is all the beautiful noise and pieces that make this place so unique.

*Convertible Wall: Presently we have gas spring mounted brackets to assist with opening and lowering the convertible wall. It is not hard for two people but still awkward. There is an additional brace (2x4) to help hold the wall up in the middle. This allows the legs to be lowered one by one or together, when two people are assisting. We thought about putting in a pulley system but it would cut into the view so we went with awkward for now.
-With two people:
*To open: you lift the wall from closed to open by pushing and lifting on integrity frame and once open, one person holds open the wall and one unlocks orange legs and places them vertically
*To close: you reverse. So one person holds the wall up while the other lowers the legs and secures the lock. Then with the gas spring bracket you slowly lower.
-For single guests:
*We have a system to safely and slowly lower/raise the wall solo and we can help if needed. We will send you specific instructions and ask if help is needed.

Everything listed above is what makes the A-frame so unique and amazingly different from other places. It is all about perspective and what experience you want to take out of it, hopefully, the above-listed items will enhance your stay and enjoyment.

Here is what else is included in the property during your stay:

¬Toilet: Outside structure: The property has a urine diverting composting toilet. In our quest to provide our customers with a toilet that is as convenient to use and operate as a flush toilet, this system uses a continuously operating exhaust fan, and no mixing is necessary. NO Mess and NO SMELL.

¬Shower: Outside structure with the inside/outside door. So you can take a shower inside or open the sliding barn door to shower outside with a secluded nature view. Propane on demand hot water heater, low for water shower head and Cruelty-Free Shampoo, Conditioner and Soap provided.

¬Wash Basin to wash hands with water and soap and towels provided.

¬Linens and Towels included. Extra blankets and throws are in A-frame to make it cozy for you.

¬Fan and Heater. Since the A-frame is convertible and open to nature, we provide a fan to cool and a Big Buddy propane heater for heat.

¬Propane BBQ with a single side burner is provided for ease of cooking with a choice of how to prepare food.

¬Plates, cups, utensils: Biodegradable Paper plates, bowls and glass products provided.

¬Breakfast: My favorite modest breakfast starter of steel cut organic or organic rolled oatmeal and fruits with “fixings." I just like it because you boil the water, let it steep for 15 minutes and eat. Easy, delicious and nutritious for the early hikers. I am not listing a full breakfast because it is not a big enough meal for all, but for me it is divine.

¬Cooking tools: Pots and skillets, cooling utensils, silverware, knives and cutting boards, french press and coffee/tea provided. All soap, dish soap, and dish towels provided.

¬Yukon Igloo cooler provided for maximum chilling of foods (we provide ice block to keep it cold). There is also a small dry cooler with snacks and s'mores.

¬Margaritaville Explorer Cordless Frozen Concoction Maker by Margaritaville: Our secret indulgence: Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville Battery operated margarita/daiquiri blender Provided. (you provide crushed ice and beverages). Makes amazing Margaritas! Very Chill and relaxing to have an excellent margarita in nature! Where else offers you a perfect margarita in nature? It is my secret pleasure at dusk- but anytime is nice-- it is 5 o'clock somewhere!

¬Herb Container: Herbs can be cut fresh and put into meals.

¬Tiki torches and citronella oils provided (2 of them with bases). There are fairy lights and solar lights illuminating the main path.

¬Fire pit and firewood provided. Please keep fires moderate or mild in size due to forest fire risk! Fire screen and fire sticks for marshmallow or bananas (vegetarian/vegan way to make s'mores) provided.

¬Camp furniture: Adirondack chairs, ottoman, bistro dining set with small table provided.

¬Stargazing: telescope and lounge chairs in the meadow

¬Games: Board and card games provided as well as coloring and colored pencils (fun for relaxation).

-Horseshoes and Giant Jenga playing area: supplies located in small shed.

¬Books on local hikes and Zion provided for use. Reading books are provided as well as magazines.

¬Water: A gallon of spring drinking water per day provided along with smaller bottles of water. Please provide your own Nalgene or bottles for hiking. Cups provided but nothing suitable for hiking. The spring water comes from Canyon Springs and Zion Ponderosa Ranch who provide the well water, but they do not use a filter system for their guests and deem it as potable water. I like filtering all water, so I will not describe the water as potable until it is multi-filtered.

¬Solar power is provided to A-frame but we like the battery operated Candles for ambiance.

¬Entry: Keyless Door lock provides security on the front door. We change periodically for the security of our guests.

¬Cart: to bring items from car to A-frame. There is a aero cart and a dolly near the shed.

We are working on having dogs on the property, so inquire if you have an animal you want to bring. But due to the predator wildlife (coyotes, wolf, cougar), if your dog is a “runner” due to no fences except park fence, I would say it is not safe. Small dogs are not safe due to eagles (5.9-7.5 foot wingspan) and owls.

If there are any questions, please contact us. We made this house with our ideas and dreams of what a perfect retreat for us would be and now share it with you. So, if there are suggested items needed please let us know.
We hope your stay is a wonderful and blissful experience filled with great memories!

Enjoy life- Britt and Mike

Rain can make the road a challenge with potential accessibility issues from late fall through the early spring months (November until March). Heavy rain can make roads impassable until mud settles without a 4-wheel drive. The parking is just off the dirt road in a graveled pullout. There is parking anywhere on the road and if you travel another 140 feet you can also park at the Stave Springs Trailhead remote parking for the National Park. A-frame is approximately 150 feet off the road and has a decline and incline. There is a cart you can use for your items if needed.

Our nearest neighbors are 500 feet away through the woods. The East Rim Trailhead is 140 feet away from the property and the East Rim Trail is 10 miles in total length. Depending on which trail you take, these hikes can be mild to strenuous with durations of 1/2 hour to 6 hours plus. East Rim Trail links with Weeping Rock , Cable Mountain, Deertrap Mountain, Hidden Canyon and Observation Point. Elevation change down into the canyon is roughly 2,150 feet.

The plateau we are on is over 6,500 feet vs 4,000 feet on the park floor, which means while Springdale is 98 F/36 C degrees, you are at 85 F/29 C degrees at the A-frame (9-13 degree difference). It can be cool in the evening and during the summer warm to hot usually during the daytime hours of 1200-1600. The upper areas of the park are part of large plateaus and are less shielded from breezes so wind-chill is something to take into consideration. Late summer/early fall (July to October) has afternoon showers that last an hour or so.

We love to explore. We love new places, people, and sights. We love still being amazed by familiar places we've seen a hundred times-it is like comfort food for our souls. We believe in challenging ourselves everyday and finding time to revel and reflect upon natural beauty; like watching an ant carrying a twig and admiring swelling roses as they bloom. We love soaking life in and enjoying what time we have. Life is good! I believe in the state of "Bliss" and sharing it with others. -Britt To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance – Oscar Wilde.
