Our spacious, tranquil, light-filled Barn Loft is thoughtfully and creatively designed. Complete with a living area, sleeping alcove, flat-screen TV, full kitchen, dining area, and large bathroom with a deluxe shower . A private deck with seating that looks out into our lovely Vermont woods and verdant gardens is attached to the loft. Stay a night or a week, there is plenty to do in every season. We are a friendly, welcoming, worldly, family. We look forward to hosting you at our country home.

Tila
The main old farmhouse where our family lives was built in the 1820's, and the Barn Loft is in the renovated old barn adjacent to the farmhouse.
The Barn Loft has a queen size bed.
The kitchen is fully equipped and ready to use. If you find yourself needing something you don't have, please don't hesitate to come next door and ask us. We are very happy to help in any way.
The outside shower has a privacy screen, and it is shared by our family and our guests. It's very enjoyable whatever the weather.
The deck beside the loft is exclusive to our Barn Loft guests, and the stone patio down at ground level, as well as the rest of the grounds, are communal spaces. We will provide wood for the chiminea, and help you build a fire in it if need be.

Vieraan pääsy
Guests have access to parking, a private entrance to the loft, a private full kitchen and bath, a private deck, a stone patio with chiminea, an outdoor shower with hot water, beautiful gardens, hammocks and a swing with lovely views, a four-season brook, and over 50 acres of marked trails for hiking or snowshoeing. Please be aware that access to the Barn Loft is up a flight of narrow stone steps. When there is snow on the ground, guests enter through the garage. The steps can be avoided by walking across the lawn.

Muuta huomioitavaa
We have lovely gardens and lawn surrounding the houses; please feel free to enjoy them. Drag a chair into the sun or find the hammock zone up the hill in the shade of the massive oaks. Wherever you choose to relax, it's impossible to escape the soothing sound of Halladay Brook, across the road from our house, but still on our property. At night, cozy up to a fire on the patio and gaze at the plentiful stars, or let Halladay Brook lull you into some of the deepest slumbers you'll ever have.
TV
There is a large flat-screen tv where you can watch a number of Roku channels and Netflix. You can log into your personal Amazon or HBO accounts via Roku. We do not have cable.
CLOTHING
This is country living, so although the interior amenities are top notch, bring season-appropriate clothing to maximize your enjoyment of the outdoors if you plan to spend any time outside. That means warm undergarments, snow-proof outerwear, and snow boots in winter and early spring. Tennis shoes or lightweight hiking shoes or boots are advisable for walking in the woods. A slip-on pair of rain boots are ideal for both kids and adults in Spring, Summer, and Fall, as the grass can be wet. Flip flops are a good call if it's warm out.
FIRST AID AND EMERGENCIES
There is bug repellant in the bathroom vanity cabinet.
The Barn Loft has a first aid kit under the sink in the bathroom; please don't hesitate to ask us for anything else you may need.
For your safety, the Barn Loft is equipped with a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, and an emergency escape ladder (tucked under the bed) in the case of an emergency evacuation.
If you do not have cell service or can use WiFi calling, please use our landline next door to dial 911.

Brattleboro, Vermont, Yhdysvallat

PLACES TO VISIT:
We are a few miles from a beautiful reservoir, Sunset Lake, which is excellent for canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, fishing, and kayaking, and occasionally ice skating
when conditions are favorable. Embark on a run, or an epic bike ride directly from the front door that could last an hour or a day through breathtaking Vermont countryside.
Our place is just 35 minutes from Mt. Snow, southern Vermont's premier ski mountain. Across Hwy 100 from Mt. Snow is Timber Creek, a lovely series of well-groomed cross country ski trails that rents equipment on site. For passes and info check the website.
Madame Sheri’s Forrest is a great place to hike/walk. It is across the Connecticut River in New Hampshire, about a 10 minute drive from exit 3 on highway 91. You can read about Madame Sheri’s incredible life and explore the stone ruins of her “castle,” and take a beautiful, mellow, 2 mile hike around what was her forest. These trails connect to the Mt Wantastiquet trails that start in New Hampshire, just across from Brattleboro by the Rt 119 bridge. To climb Wantastiquet from Brattleboro, cross the green bridge across from the Brattleboro Food Coop on Rt 119. Take a left as soon as you cross the Connecticut River, and look for parking and trailhead signs. There is a beautiful view of Brattleboro on clear days.

FOOD AND SUPPLIES:

REBOP FARM— is a super sweet farm stand exactly 1 mile up Sunset Lake Rd from us. Look for the pink mailbox in the left. They sell eggs, meat, produce, coffee, ice cream, cheese, honey, syrup, ferments, etc. It’s wonderful. Bring a mask.

Patio Coffee--the best espresso and coffee in town is Patio Coffee, a coffee cart and local discussion hub located in the Hooker Dunham alley in summer, and in the lobby of the building of the same name in downtown Brattleboro in winter. Please check Instagram (@patiocoffee) for current hours.

DUTTON FARM STAND—is a year-round farm store only 5 minutes away on Hwy 9. It sells seasonal, fresh, local produce, baked goods, and maple syrup, along with some shelf staples and local dairy.

BRATTLEBORO FOOD CO-OP—For a larger shop, visit this amazing Food Coop in downtown Brattleboro. It has everything you need to create the finest meals, an extensive deli/prepared foods section, a generous selection of Vermont cheeses, and a very impressive beer and wine department.

GRAFTON CHEESE SHOP— is a popular cheese and gourmet culinary shop that sells specialty Vermont items and gifts also. It's located on the historic Retreat Farm.

THE BRATTLEBORO FARMERS’ MARKET—runs Saturdays May-October and is the cutest farmers' market you'll ever see. It is straight out of the shire with it’s quaint booths and festive vibe. It's the perfect place to pick up local, amazing produce, meat, and dairy for cooking up, to or just relax, listen to live music, and eat great food. It's also a great place for kids to run around. Check out the website for more info. Please note that COVID-19 has altered normal market protocol. Please see the website for more info.

THE VERMONT DELI—is a popular tourist stop for deli items, upscale groceries (limited), sandwiches and bakery (pies!). Located on Rt 9 at exit 2 of IH 91.

OURDOOR GEAR:
Sam’s on Main St has anything and everything you might need. It is a fully stocked outdoor retailer with clothing camping, and footwear. This is our go-to spot for wool socks.

DINING AND DRINKS:
The Chelsea Royal Diner---for a classic Vermont diner experience. It's located at the corner of Rt. 9 and Sunset Lake Rd (just 1.5 miles from the Loft). Part of the cozy dining room is made of an old railway car. In the summer, a classic menu that includes grass fed burgers and yam fries, can be purchased along with their delicious Vermont-made ice cream outside on their front patio.
The Williamsville Eatery---our favorite restaurant in the area located in the village of Williamsville. I recommend making a reservation as they are only open for dinner Thursday-Sunday. You can often nudge into a seat at the bar to eat if you are one or two people. They serve seasonal, sustainably-grown, predominantly locally-sourced fare in the cozy atmosphere of the old general store. Williamsville is about 5.5 miles away, at the far end of Sunset Lake Rd. It's a beautiful drive. I suggest peeking at Sunset Lake on the way (left on Lake Rd). Go the long route through Brattleboro and Rt. 30 in the winter unless you have a 4-wheel drive and snow tires.
Yala Vermont-- is a delicious middle-eastern lunch spot on Main St (they have limited hours, so call ahead). Fresh pita bread and hummus is always available for purchase.
Duo --a popular wine bar serving fresh, seasonal food, and excellent brunches and the best bar for a quality cocktail.
Some of Brattleboro's best restaurants are Peter Havens (new-American bistro, specializing in seafood), TJ Buckley's (seasonal new-American cuisine),
Whetstone Station Restaurant and Brewery (classic pub food recommended for their deck overlooking the Connecticut River), The Marina (we do not recommend the food here, but it’s a great summer spot for drinks, and it has a lovely view of the confluence of the West River and the Connecticut River), and Top of the Hill Grill (a seasonally-open award-winning barbeque joint). If you like sour beers, try Hermit Thrush Brewery just off Main St. before you head for dinner.
Latchis Theater--Brattleboro's beloved, restored "Greco-deco" beauty and part of the League of Historic American Theatres. Check the website for a current list of movie showtimes and special event listings.

SWIMMING--
West River--"The Jumping Off Rock," park at the pull-over on Rt 30 that is .4 miles east of the intersection of Rt 30 and Upper Dummerston Rd (the second intersection of Rt 30 and Upper Dummerston coming from Brattleboro).
Rock River--
"The Williamsville Bridge Spot." Drive on Sunset Lake Rd to Williamsville. At the stop sign at the end of the road, park directly across the road beside the old 5-door white town garage building. Walk toward the bridge and look for the trail that goes down to the river right where the guardrail for the bridge begins. The trail is narrow and steep down to the River. Broad Brook--Turn left on Broad Brook Rd from Rt 5 south leaving Brattleboro. Drive about 1/2 mile and park at the pullout immediately before the bridge.

Originally from Austin, TX, I am a transplant to Vermont after twenty years of living in the Mission district of San Francisco and the Bay Area. We are a well-travelled family, only settling in VT after a year of living in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico and then living in a van, traveling the US with our two daughters and two dogs for eight months. The need to care for an ailing family member brought us here to Brattleboro, VT, boyhood home of my husband Shawn. We love it here, despite our pining for the West Coast, which I believe will never go away. We are a family that cooks, plays music, enjoys parks and museums, surfs, skis, hangs with friends, walks and rides bikes, and gets crafty. We couldn't get by without our good friends everywhere. We enjoy building community, a passionate continuation of our life in San Francisco, where we ran a beloved, small music venue in the Mission for 15 years. Here in Vermont we enjoy a deep connection to nature and the power of the seasons. We cherish both the swimming holes of summer, and the snow sports of winter. Then there’s the bliss of Spring gardening, when the whole world wakes up again, and also the preparations of Fall—chopping wood, forest walks, and preparing for snow to cover the landscape yet again. Vermont is a special place where beauty overwhelms and the quality of life is sky high. We hope you find your way here to us.

We live in a separate, nearby house, so we are usually here if you need anything. We'll show you all around when you arrive, so you will know where everything is. From there it's up to you to choose how much interaction you have with us, if any. We are always happy to share information about the area, and also to show you the many trails on our land if that interests you.
