Hickory is a renovated 15-room century-old Heritage bungalow perched on the eastern slope of Penang Hill, 650m above sea level. There are panoramic vistas of Georgetown by night and of sunrise over the mainland.
Hickory sits on half an acre of secluded woodland and manicured lawns.
The days are cool and the evenings cooler. Temperatures are typically 6C lower at this elevation.

HICKORY - HOW TO GET THERE
Hickory is accessible via the Swiss-engineered funicular rail which links Penang Hill’s Lower Station to Upper Station (Stop“1” on the Map), at an elevation of 750m. The journey time is about 5min.
If you are coming by car you can park at Lower Station where you purchase your train ticket. The stop for Hickory is Lower Tunnel Station (Stop “3”), 650m above sea level.
The stopping train service is every half-hour on the hour (every hour on weekends). Board the front coach of the train and ask the driver to stop at Lower Tunnel Station. Alight here and a 5-min walk along Lower Tunnel Road brings you to Hickory ( Bungalow “14”).
Alternatively, you can reach Hickory via a 10-minute walk from Top Station via By-Paths A & F. Follow the signs.

Retain your ticket for the return journey.
Hickory is close to the Hiking Trail that shadows the rail track at the lower reaches and brushes past Hickory on the way to the Top. It takes around 90 mins to Hickory (another 15 min to the Top).

HICKORY – THE SURROUNDINGS
There are various forest trials (By-Paths) on Penang Hill. You can spend days exploring Penang Hill walking along the paths and studying Penang Hill’s unique flora and fauna.
You will come across other century-old Heritage bungalows, originally used by senior British officers of the Colonies as a respite from the tropical heat of the lowlands. They now belong to the State or are in private hands.

PENANG HILL BUNGALOWS
Penang Hill Bungalows are a legacy of Penang’s history. They were built by the British Administrators on the choicest land on Penang Hill. Many were used to seek convalescence from the malaria-plague lowlands.
The original 19th century bungalows were single storey low ceiling buildings surrounded by a spacious veranda for guests to enjoy the evening vistas, sipping Tea. The interior typically comprises an open living and dining area, from which doors lead to bedrooms on either side.
The bungalows were rebuilt in the early 20th century with a mix of wood, stone and brick.
Malaysia’s hill station bungalows of Penang Hill, Fraser’s Hill and Cameron Highlands have many structural similarities.
Local residents built bungalows at lower elevations. They maintained the tradition of European names for their bungalows….Mon Sejour, Dolce Domum, Fairmont, Grace Dieu, Lausanne, etc.
Post-ndependence, the British bungalows were handed over to the State. They continue to carry their British names ……… Bel Retiro, Richmond, Convalescent Bungalow, and so on.
Development on Penang Hill is strictly enforced. The stock of 45 bungalows remains unchanged and is tightly held. Transactions are rare.
