Palmento Grove Garifuna Eco-Cultural & Fishing Institute is the only full service indigenous owned vacation service provider in Hopkins offering authentic Garifuna & Belizean Cultural Experiences. We are please to share our culture with our guests while our business also serves to provide & fund Garifuna Cultural Preservation Projects to our Garifuna Community of Hopkins. We are located at the Freshwater Lagoon Estuary which is the most popular fishing spot in Hopkins. Over Johnson Island was originally the home of 3 Yugandan sisters from which Hopkins derived its Garifuna name Yugada. In the early 1900s a British overseer succeeded in occupying the island. The island then became a hub for commercial activities such as agricultural farm management, timber extraction & cattle farming. Over Johnson Island is known to have the oldest well that provided portable water in the Commerce Bight Area that has been there for over 70 years. The island continues to be of great historic significance after Hurricane Greta in 1941, when the inhabitants of New Town sought to have settled on the island seeking a new place to call home after Newtown was destroyed; but it was deemed too small for the population so they later moved into Hopkins where they can currently punctuate the landscape. The Garinagu having settled to call Hopkins their new Home throughout the years since 1941 would come to use the island for hunting, farming & fishing. Over Johnson Island is now dedicated to Garifuna Cultural Preservation being managed by Martinez Family spanning 3 generations.
