The Fern & Thistle is a magnificent last century villa built on 6,000m2 of private landscaped gardens just north of Balclutha. The property provides the perfect setting to escape from the world whilst you enjoy the extensive gardens or use it as a base to explore the gorgeous Catlins scenic area on our doorstep. Previously used as a premium wedding venue, Lesmagahow features an assortment of picturesque back drops to relax in or explore. Alternatively you may just prefer to soak in the hot pool, enjoy the garden lighting and stare up at the stars. For younger families the property has plenty to offer too, including a enclosed trampoline, swing set, ride on cars, games and plenty of toys. There is also a small public children's playground next door. Each bedroom provides generous space for a queen bed, seating, flat screen TV and a port-a-cot if required.

Benhar is a short 3min drive north of Balclutha, the gateway to the magnificent Caitlins nature area and only 35 minutes south of Dunedin airport.

Benhar is a peaceful rural community which also boasts some historical sites such as the McSkimming's brick works which was founded in the 1800's and gutted by fire in the 1990's. Benhar was NZ's first feudal town, being built by Peter McSkimmings to house and cater for his large contingent of local workers. In 1914 he built Lesmahagow for his family as he continued to produce NZ's finest sanitary ware.

The property has hosted dozens of weddings and local events as well as some international dignitaries during their time in NZ. For the keen environmentalists Lake Tuakitoto and is close by providing a nature walk and wildlife spotting.

Hi folks I'm Matt. In 2019 chucked in my high stress sales job in Perth and shifted back to NZ with my young family to pursue a more family orientated lifestyle. Whilst on the search for a new home I stumbled across and fell in love with Lesmahagow. Coming from a customer service back ground it has always been my dream to run a BnB and provide fantastic experiences for my clientele. With its generous proportions, spectacular architecture and fabulous history Lesmahagow presented the perfect opportunity to pursue my dream. Its my mission to offer the best value for money accommodation in Otago and an experience that you will not forget.

The home is broken into two wings, one for our guests whilst there other houses our young family and cat. Maintaining the property is a full time job so someone is usually always available should you need something. Please note tariff is for ONE bedroom only, although there are up to 3 available by arrangement (See other listings). A splendid continental breakfast is standard with your room or you can upgrade to a magnificent cooked breakfast for only $15p/p. The property is both child and pet friendly.
