After deciding the 100 year old house on site was beyond repair, we demolished it, but diverted 99% of its materials from going to the landfill. The old bricks went into the construction of our pavilion, and we reclaimed multiple pallets of heart pine that our woodworker incorporated into the hostel's furniture and sleeping spaces. All unusable materials went in as filler in the landscape construction.

The 26 pre-cast concrete slabs that make up the exterior of The Crash Pad provide a high level of thermal efficiency and only required 3 days of install time. We used an interior scheme called "Embodied Energy." Rather than using new or decorative materials or finishes, we relied on things that were already here: a concrete floor, wood beams and joists, re-used materials, and local craftsmen. We wanted an industrial, durable, and vernacular architecture; there’s also the side benefit that there is no off-gassing of harmful VOCs in reused materials. We want our interior air to be as clean and pure as the air outside.

The greenroof on top of The Crash Pad helps to insulate the entire building and well never need replacing. It also satisfies 95% of our stormwater runoff requirements.

A solar array above the entrance is tied into the city's power grid. We use gas-powered tankless water heaters, low-flow sinks, showers, and toilets, LED lighting, energy-efficient washers and dryers, and re-useable cloth hand towels instead of paper towels.

Vieraan pääsy
Guests will receive 24/7 access to the hostel via a key fob received upon check-in. This key fob will also provide access to your floor and private room.

Guests are welcome to hang out in the cabana whenever they like. We have free WiFi, two iMac's for guest use, a full kitchen full of amenities to cook with, a full fridge, and shelves for storage. Breakfast is from 8am - 11am and is free of charge. Our bread comes from Niedlov's, which is right across the street. Mayfly Roasting Company provides us with amazing coffee. Breakfast also includes eggs, spreads, oatmeal, and tea.

Out back, we have a pavilion with a gas fire pit, gas grill, 4 speakers, and 4 space heaters. Out in the yard, you'll find a slackline. If you'd like to play cornhole or bocce ball, let us know!

The Southside of Chattanooga was once the city's urban center of industry. Over time, it became known for its abandoned warehouses and old buildings. In the last decade, the Southside has been revitalized with art, culture, cuisine, and entertainment and has come to define the city. With the 50+ businesses that pepper the neighborhood as proof, this once-desolate area is experiencing a second life.
