“A Norman church refurbished many times in other periods. It looks baroque outside but once you get in you'll find the most stunning and precious bizantine mosaics of the Norman period. This church is a must see in Palermo, together with the other two in the same piazza!”

“The Cathedral of Monreale, founded by William II in 1172 and dedicated to Santa Maria Nuova houses the largest mosaic decoration (over 6,000 square meters) of the entire production of the Mediterranean basin, performed by Byzantine workers, with vetero stories and new Testamentaries and the Christ Pantocrator in the apse. The plant, like the great Cistercian and Cluniac Romanesque cathedrals, follows the model of the Cathedral of Cefalù. The use of bichrome inlays in lava stone, recessed niches with rings, braided arches and chevron enriches the walls of the external façades and the apses, highlighting the architectural ribs. On the right side of the presbytery, there are the sarcophagus in porphyry of Guglielmo I and the marble one of Guglielmo II. The Cathedral is next to the cloister of the ancient Benedictine monastery characterized by arcades with ogival arches with double arches, supported by twin columns, alternately decorated with mosaics. The sculptural plastic of the capitals, engraved with biblical scenes, is a surprising and original example of Romanesque-Mediterranean art, where there is a mixture of formal and ornamental elements with a classic flavor and Gothic elements of Provençal taste.”

“Jesus's Church is one of the most important Baroque churches of Palermo and Sicily. After almost two years of restoration, the building was reopened for worship in 2009. The Jesuits began the construction of the Church attached to the main one (Casa Professa) in the late sixteenth century, in a place traditionally considered a refuge for hermits, including St. Calogero, still center of early Christian catacombs. The building, a large transept and nave with side chapels, was designed by the Jesuit Giovanni Tristano. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, to adapt it to the needs of the grandeur of worship, designed by Natale Masuccio, were shot down the dividing walls of the chapels, getting three aisles. In 1892, the Church was declared "National Monument". During the Second World War a bomb fell on the dome and in the collapse, dragged most of the paintings of the presbytery and the transept. The interior is an important example of the fusion between architecture, painting and plastic decoration "a maschio", a valuable marble inlays, made with floral motifs or figurative. The most spectacular part of the building is perhaps the tribune apse, adorned by Shepherd Adoration (1710-1714) and Magi Adoration (1719-1721), marble bas-reliefs on the grandstand seats, by Gioacchino Vitagliano.”

“Main Siracusa church, alghouth only once you arrive in the Duomo square (from Via Cavour) you will understand my suggestion really :) It is a unic case, in the Mediterranean area, of a greek temple ( V century b.C.) that, after 2500 year, it is still an active church.”

“Another must see in Palermo, a Norman church, next to the luxuriant church Martorana, this is smaller and very simple, because it does not contain mosaics (as it was unfinished) and it was the private chapel of a private palazzo. What is particularly valuable here is the floor. But the outside architecture is very beautiful and so typical of Palermo, with its pink, 'arabic' domes, also found in other Norman churches in Palermo and Sicily. They are due to the strong tardition of the arabic population, and in particular, their builders, overcome, but not underestimated when it came to building and other cultural fields, by the Normans.”
