If you enjoy a walk, the Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley and the walk over to Rievaulx Abbey is delightful. The site is run by English Heritage and the grounds, history and ambience make a beautiful, tranquil place to visit. You can visit the cafe or shop without paying the entry fee.

The 128 Acre Arboretum is a joint venture between the Castle Howard Estate and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Originating in 1959 and presently the home to some 6,000 trees. There is also a cafe on site with an outdoor veranda.

Best known as the location for the filming of Heartbeat. Some of the buildings used are easily recognised to the visitor. The Moorland village is also home to one of the train stops for the North York Moors railway. It is possible to do an easy level walk from Goathland to Grosmont or vice versa and catch the steam train in the opposite direction. The railway station was used in the filming of Harry Potter. There are also a collection of small waterfalls in the area for the walker who seeks them out. Cafes, tearooms and pubs and the excellent Mallyan Spout Hotel for the special meal or snack.

It is also home to several weekend festivals the most well known are the Goth Weekends, held twice a year. Lots of places to enjoy fish and chips including The Magpie and Trenchers. It is also known for Bram Stokers Dracula and home for a while to James Cook, where he sailed on the HMS Bark Endeavour.
