If you want to spend your holiday in a highly unusual location, the kind that you rarely stumble upon, you could go to Patara beach. The most important Lycian port, the ancient city of Patara, lies a few kilometres from the beach. If you walk along the path to Patara beach, you will find that there is not only the sunshine and the sparkling white sand but also a whole new era of history that you will be visiting. The ancient city of Patara is situated close to one of the Mediterranean’s most famous holiday resorts, the town of Kalkan in the district of Kaş, in Antalya. It is also very near to Fethiye, another holiday resort similar to Kalkan. Patara beach is one of the nature’s most amazing works and could well be the setting for the most exciting surfing you ever do; perfect sunsets you ever witness, from sand dunes which resemble the desert; and the freshest air, fragrant with pine, that you ever breathe. It is a unique experience to have a relaxing walk on the beach and swim in the sea accompanied by the views of the ancient city. In the meantime, don’t forget to explore the world’s first lighthouse and say hello to the Caretta-Caretta turtles.

For many years, climbed 186 stairs in the world-famous Kaputas Beach ... turquoise with so much publicity about the photographic frame that Turkey must use this beach. In recent years, the number of steps has been reduced by almost half and a daily facility has been established, so the number of visitors has increased even more. The sea owes its turquoise color to the almost white colored pebbles that cover the beach. The reason why the sea is cool is that the spring water flowing from the mountains joins the sea underground. Coming to the beach, which is 7 km from Kalkan and 20 km from Kas, can cause stress in terms of parking, especially in summer. The road to the beach turns into a long car park. Perhaps it is best to come from Kaş bus station by minibuses or taxis that regularly depart every 20 minutes in the summer.

Sunken City, Kekova Kekova Island is a small, rocky island across from Kalekoy and Ucagiz near the city of Demre. There is no settlement on the island. Covered in green trees, wild thyme, bush, and rock, it spans parallel to the mainland. It’s thought that the name Kekikli Ova (Thyme Plains) was eventually shortened into the name Kekova. You’ll see ancient Lycian ruins on a boat tour around the island. The highest density of ruins is found on the northern side of the island. In this area, the sunken ruins of the ancient city of Dolkisthe, which sunk after earthquakes in the 1st century CE, are still visible. Including Kekova Island and the nearby coast, this special area was placed under protection in 1990. Swimming is forbidden in this area, but on boat tours of Kekova we visit multiple nearby coves where you can swim.

Kalkan also has its own public beach, located near the entrance to its buzzy harbour. The beach’s white pebbles mean that the water here is incredibly clear. In fact, the beach holds Blue Flag status. It’s brilliantly convenient for those staying in town and has good facilities and easy access to the Kalkan food scene, for a post-beach Ottoman feast. However, Kalkan Beach is relatively small and does get very busy in summer, so if you are after vast sandy shores or a peaceful bay, we recommend driving towards Kaş and stopping wherever catches your eye. The route is scattered with tiny off the radar beaches and swimming spots.

This ancient city is located partly under the present city and partly on the peninsula in the east-west direction. There is not a visible structure that can be reached from Antiphellos to the present, except the Amphitheater. Where the walls approach the harbor, today is a converted church and (on hthe southwest of this church) ruins of the temple are located. The best preserved parts of the city are the ancient amphytheater and the graves. The theater, which overlooks the sea at the height of the peninsula and has beautiful stone workmanship, has typical Hellenistic theater features. There is no stage part of the theater.
