A great place to explore Mayan Ruins. What makes Coba different that other sites is that it is not a single site, but a large group of sites connected to the central pyramid by over 16 Mayan ceremonial white roads or scabeob. All the white roads lead from one settlement to the man pyramind, Nohoch Mul. Coba was ignored for many years because of its location. It was first discovered in the 1800's but due to dense jungle, war, and lack of funds, it was difficult to excavate. To this day, Coba is still largely unexcavated, meaning there is still so much to discover. Walking, the tour will take you about 2.5 hours. We recommend renting a bike, about 1.5 hours. Or a Mayan limo (a chauffeured tricycle) will allow you to sit and take in the sites, also a great idea if you have little ones.

A great educational experience! This village is a great little detour after, or before, your visit to the Coba Ruins. The village has been passed down for generations and the family still lives and works the land. They are proud to show you the way they live now and have for many years. The tour is free, but please tip the guide. He does speak English, Spanish and Mayan. He will show you around the village, explain everything from how they grow and prepare their food, collect their water, build, hunt, grow medicine, and so much more. On our experiences, our kids have enjoyed making tortillas by hand with the "grandmas". They are the sweetest and speak only Mayan so it is fun to watch the giggles between them and the kids, knowing that no one understands each others words but they still understand each other. We also learned about the sacred Mayan honeybee and touched artifacts that would normally only be behind glass in museums. Finish your visit by buying some Mayan honey to take with you, other handmade items, and even a Mayan Blessing.
