Sightseeing
Crex Meadows is a uniquely managed WI DNR wildlife refuge, about eight miles north of here. However, it is critical to stop at the Wildlife and Visitor Center, to pick up a map before you start your drive. Locals can get lost on the roads at Crex! Even though the Visitor Center is closed, due to Covid, you can pick up a map and other brochures outside the main door. Crex's mission is to restore the area to the original brush prairie wetland habitat. The area has 23 miles of dikes that flood 8,000 acres of land. The flowages offer incredible wildlife viewing, where you can see trumpeter swans, geese, ducks, yellow-headed blackbirds, red-necked grebes, marsh wrens, and least bitterns. One of the highlights is the huge flocks of sandhill cranes. All of these birds use Crex as breeding grounds, so you can see many baby birds in the spring. There are also 7,000 acres of prairies, that are managed by fire. 3,500 acres are burned every spring to provide optimum habitats for prairie grouse and waterfowl. Sharp-tailed grouse do an elaborate mating dance every spring in the prairie. Activities that you can do at Crex include: bird and wildlife watching, hiking, biking, wildlife photography, wildflower searching, snowshoeing snowmobiling, and animal tracking. Make sure you visit the Crex Meadows Wildlife and Visitor Center, when it is open! Our oldest daughter has spent so much time here, she knows every bird in the North American Birdbook. Our entire family enjoys Crex and spends many hours looking for birds and wildlife. We almost always see deer, and we also see beavers, muskrats, fishers, weasels, badgers, fox, coyotes, and bears. Take your bird book and your binoculars!
