Small but unique with a seedy appeal, Port Costa is seemingly at odds with the larger Bay Area landscape. Located just 18 minutes/8.3 miles across the Carquinez Bridge, it is a “town stuck in amber, honoring its past through near-total preservation.” Built around the time of the Gold Rush as a ferry landing for the busy Central Pacific Railroad, with its current population of just 243, Port Costa has become a destination for motorcycle riders, antique aficionados, and adventurous types. Be sure to check out and dine at the fabulous (but expensive) Bull Valley Roadhouse or visit the funky hangout, Warehouse Cafe/Pub famous for its taxidermy polar bear. Check internet for hours for all establishments.

Adventuring across the Mare Island Causeway is like crossing a bridge into a forgotten world buried in layers of Bay Area history. A stone’s throw away, Mare Island Naval Shipyard, MINSY, was established in 1854 and was the first American naval base on the Pacific Ocean. Like ghosts, much of the old military buildings, concrete bomb shelters, brick warehouses, and stately officer’s mansions can be seen in a state of ruins while others are undergoing restoration and repurposing. Lining the waterfront of the Mare Island Historic Core are antique cranes, dry docks and ways. In a grove of towering eucalyptus, St. Peter’s Chapel, the oldest naval chapel in the country, contains scores of signed Tiffany stained glass windows. Mare Island is also home to the West Coast’s oldest naval cemetery. In this extraordinary portal to another time, the island’s shipyard is a national treasure with 42 individual city landmarks. Recently established, a popular tap room, whisky distillery and winery offer a relaxing respite from exploring the evocative beauty of the island.
