Sightseeing

The famous central Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built between 1863 and 1880 by French colonists, is one of HCMC's (aka. Saigon) architectural marvels. Around the red brick building you often see teams of photographers with wedding couples, the brides either in European white dresses, Asian red dresses or traditionally Vietnamese: in the red áo dài. The current name Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica replaced the older term in 1962, when the Vatican elevated the building to a basilica and declared it chief cathedral of Saigon. The Reunification Palace is one of Saigon's most popular tourist attractions. The official handover of power took place here on April 30, 1975 and the place became a monument to that fateful date. The highlight is the basement that looks like a wartime movie set. It is located within walking distance from several other point of interests. You can go from there to the Saigon's Post Office or the Notre Dame Cathedral. If you want to do some shopping, it is also not far from the luxury department store Diamond Plaza.

Built between 1886 and 1891 by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel, the building’s vaulted roof and arched windows are reminiscent of early European railway stations. Cu Chi Tunnels are a vast network of underground tunnels from the 1940s, expanded by guerrilla Viet Cong during the American War. The tunnels were hiding places, as well as communication and supply routes, hospitals and living quarters. Sections of the tunnel system large enough for a 40kg person have been widened to cater for larger bodies, but it's still a tight fit. Cu Chi is a short drive from HCMC and most Saigon tour companies offer day trips. Entrance: VND90,000 (adults), VND45,000 (children)
