Near Tazewell, VA, about 25 min drive from our home. There's no place like Burkes Garden but few know about it. It's a geological wonder, and solely a farming community. The Appalachian trail runs along the edge. The General Store now serves Amish-style dinners. About a 30 min drive from my house.

If you make a trip to McDowell County, you can get a good Greek Salad here. The original restaurant is in KIMBALL, WV, on Rt 52, across from the Kimball War Memorial. Google places this restaurant in Welch WV too. I go to the one in Kimball.

Great day trip would be to drive to Abingdon, Va (1.5 hours from my house), rent bikes and take the Virginia Creeper Trail (part of a Rails-to-Trails system). Nothing is more beautiful in the fall than a ride on this bike trail.

Great museum store here, then you take a 1/4mile walk thru woods to a restored village. The walk thru the woods is my favorite part. The BP gas station nearby sells local ARTISIAN water.

20 min drive from my place. You can actually walk through this coal mine. The coal seam was 13 feet deep and put this area on the map. Plan a visit here then take the shortcut road to Bramwell, WV and look at the Millionaire houses and eat at the corner drugstore/fountain.

Music is such a huge part of our local culture and you'll realize some of the amazing local talent with a trip to the Sterling Drive-In, located deep in coal country, in Welch, WV. This is the place Anthony Bordaine visited for one of his last shows. The second Friday of each month is OpenMic at the Sterling and the place is usually full of people eating and listening to great tunes. Welch, WV (in McDowell County) is about a 45 min drive from my house, but I go every chance I get. Last time I thought I was hearing Joan Baez or Bob Dylan--the talent was that good. Locals sing coal mining ballads. Check out their FB page.
