Out in Freeville is this very magic place! Special preserve with lovely easy hiking through unique glacially formed topography. From the website:
"At the O.D. von Engeln Preserve at Malloryville, more than a mile of eskers — ancient river beds that once ran through glaciers — wind through a pocket of forest adjacent to Fall Creek. At the foot of the eskers, groundwater bubbles up in a constant stream of minerals that nurture rare plants and a wide variety of animals.
The amazing diversity of wetland habitats within the preserve, from bogs to fens to wooded swamps, nurtures a variety of rare plants and natural communities found in few other places in New York."

Take a ten minute drive or a longer bike trip to this extremely well run nature center, with trails through meadows, woods, bogs. Unique glacier made landscapes abound in this area northeast of the lake and Lime Hollow is no exception. Go for longer hikes or check out a kid friendly trail with site specific art works in the form of various statues. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter is splendid here, with rentals for everything available. The staff is informative, and leads excellent interpretive walks and programs throughout the year.

Epic, dramatic cliff gorges in Lord of the Rings level of scenery. Shorter hikes and longer hikes available. In my opinion, hands down the number one gorge waterfall trail in an area rich in these things. Natural pool in lower Treman is wonderful for swimming. Diving board frames the lower cascades their perfectly! The wooded trail between lower and upper Treman is just wonderful. For a shorter stunning 45 minute hike go to Upper Treman, 3 miles up the road from Lower Treman and do the gorge loop. For a long multi hour hike, hike from Lower Treman to Upper Treman, do the loop and hike back. There is a popular life-guarded swimming hole at the bottom.

TREMAN STATE PARK
105 Enfield Falls RdEpic, dramatic cliff gorges in Lord of the Rings level of scenery. Shorter hikes and longer hikes available. In my opinion, hands down the number one gorge waterfall trail in an area rich in these things. Natural pool in lower Treman is wonderful for swimming. Diving board frames the lower cascades their perfectly! The wooded trail between lower and upper Treman is just wonderful. For a shorter stunning 45 minute hike go to Upper Treman, 3 miles up the road from Lower Treman and do the gorge loop. For a long multi hour hike, hike from Lower Treman to Upper Treman, do the loop and hike back. There is a popular life-guarded swimming hole at the bottom.
My favorite public spot on Cayuga Lake, across the channel from the rowdier Myers Point (with playgrounds, canoe rentals, lifeguards etc), Salt Point is great for families, birdwatchers, etc who want a quieter lake experience. Osprey nests, quiet nooks along the lake to wade out from, a short trail through a shrub like ecosystem. Good for little ones!
