Culinary delights at the most striking location of the Haarlemmermeer. History Fort The fort at Vijfhuizen is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a 19th-century line of defense around the capital. The Defense Line consists of a ring of forts, batteries, numerous dikes, locks and inundation polders. With the threat of a hostile army, dikes would be broken and a gigantic ring of water emerged. The Defense Line is a high point of defensive and hydraulic engineering technology and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996 and must be preserved for future generations, as are Versailles and the Pyramids of Giza. The fort at Vijfhuizen had been vacant for years and slowly fell victim to vandalism and the elements. Seized by its charm and history, a plan was developed for a second life.

The De Cruquius pumping station from 1849 is one of the three pumping stations that pumped the Haarlemmermeer dry between 1849 and 1852. Moreover, it is the largest steam engine in the world. The pumping station was never modernized and was put out of operation in 1933. It belongs to the Top 100 of the Dutch national monuments.

Venneperhout lies to the south of Nieuw-Vennep, adjacent to the Getsewoud and Linquenda residential areas. The park covers more than eighty hectares. The first construction was completed in 2003. The second part was officially opened on 31 May 2009, during the annual Day of the Park. You can go for a nice walk or run in the area. Do not expect mature nature yet, because the greenery is not yet 'finished': just like everything else in nature, it needs time to grow.

Park Zwanenburg is a 35-hectare recreational area on the southeast side of Zwanenburg. With the arrival of a bicycle bridge over the Ringvaart, the park will not only become a recreational area for Zwanenburgers, but also a green junction for holidaymakers from the region. In the future, they can cycle from Amsterdam to the beach via this route. One hectare of the park has not yet been purchased. Four different atmospheres determine the image of the park. 'De Brink' is the main entrance and the central axis of the park. Here you will find a basketball court, skate park and parking area, among other things. 't Park' is the former swimming pool area and has been transformed into a park in English landscape style. 'De Kreek' connects the park components with each other and 't Veld' consists of canals and elongated groves. On the east side of the currently under construction Westrandweg a swamp area will be connected with a fauna tunnel to the other parts of Park Zwanenburg. The swamp area is laid out simultaneously with the road.

Geniedijk A green dike runs right through Haarlemmermeer. From Vijfhuizen he shoots diagonally into the country. He does not care about the straight plots and roads. He brutally squeezes himself through the buildings in Hoofddorp, past the center and then on to Aalsmeer. It is therefore not just a dyke. It is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a historic line of defense that has even received the "World Heritage" stamp from UNESCO. Defense Line The line of defense consists of canals, dikes with dams and locks, sites that could be flooded (inundation) and 46 forts and batteries. The idea behind the Defense Line is a piece of Dutch hydraulic engineering ingenuity. With an ingenious system, the land around the line could be flooded, creating a pond, not deep enough for ships and too deep for man and horse. Even before the Theorem was completed, it was already obsolete. The arrival of the aircraft deprived the line of its meaning. However, the forts and infrastructure were preserved, creating a unique monument of defense and hydraulic engineering. In Haarlemmermeer, from east to west, there is a line that is more than ten kilometers long, locally called the Geniedijk. Old and young planted poplars give the Geniedijk a recognizable character. Forts The Geniedijk starts in the west at the Fort van Vijfhuizen on the Cruquiusdijk and runs through the Fort near Hoofddorp to the Fort near Aalsmeer on the Aalsmeerderdijk. Fort near Aalsmeer is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, northeast of Rijsenhout. Outside the Geniedijk and the aforementioned forts there are more Stelling components in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. Less well known are Fort de Liede and Fort bij Heemstede in Cruquius. Both forts are part of a precursor to the Defense Line of Amsterdam, also known as the Posten van Kraijenhoff. The former forts on the Nieuwe Meer and Schiphol were also part of this predecessor. In addition, there are various other Scaffolding parts along and on the dike, such as locks and (secondary) batteries. Green backbone The Geniedijk still has a strategic location, no longer for military purposes, but nowadays for recreational use and as an ecological connection. The Geniedijk forms a green ribbon in the urban area of Hoofddorp and is a busy cycling and walking connection. The cycle path connects the adjacent neighborhoods and cores, green areas and recreational areas and forms an oasis of tranquility. The cycle route runs alternately on the north side, south side and over the crown of the dike. In the midst of sheep and cows, many residents of Haarlemmermeer and beyond walk and cycle. In addition, the Geniedijk is also an important ecological connection. The dike offers space for various plants, birds and small mammals. It is an important migration route for animals, including butterflies and bats through Hoofddorp. Plants also spread easily via the Geniedijk. Genie park The eastern part of the Geniedijk lies between Hoofddorp station and the Ringvaart. As part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, this dyke has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. Around this eastern part of the Geniedijk is the Geniepark, which will be further expanded in the coming years, especially over the A4. This new green heart offers space for culture, recreation and relaxation in the midst of activity. In 2015, 260 fruit trees were planted in the Geniepark, between the Rijnlanderweg and the A4. Anyone can pick or pick up fruit in the fruit tree meadow. There are trees with apples, plums, walnuts, medlar and hawthorns. Stadsherstel Amsterdam has restored the battery on Sloterweg (crossing of Rijnlanderweg), as well as the old ammunition bunkers and casemates of the Stelling van Amsterdam on the Geniedijk. From July 2018 this place has become a creative breeding ground with studios for artists. The name for this inspiring and creative work and meeting place for artists, the public and the business community is GinDS, or Geniedijk in De Stelling. Public exhibitions can be visited regularly in the Battery aan den Sloterweg.

The Toolenburgerplas, near the Hoofddorp district of Toolenburg, is a paradise for sun lovers and "non-motorized water sports enthusiasts". Here you can swim, surf and sunbathe. Cycling and walking are also possible. The design of the recreational lake is inspired by the surrounding polder. Rectangular shapes are interspersed with winding banks, winding paths and ragged edges. At the lake there are a number of restaurants where you can sit on the terrace on the water, such as restaurant Lieveling and restaurant Long Island.
