A fifteen minute drive from the Hawthorne: Dozens of beaches in La Jolla. La Jolla Cove is a must visit location. Cormorants, pelicans, sea lions and seals. great fo snorkeling. Marine Maritime Reserve.
1. Check the traffic. La Jjolla is very popular and at certain times getting into the village can be much longer than fifteen minutes.
2. Parking. In summer parking at the beach gets very crowded. If you go to La jolla Shores go very early to get good parking. Or in the evening after 4 PM.
3. Secret spot - In the village you can park in La Jolla Financial Building. 1200 Prospect Street. There is a gym on level 5. Showers, hot tub, free towels and even a sauna! And at that level you can walk out the door and be at the beach - The Cove Beach which is also a Marine Reserve - lots of fish, birds, sea lions etc. The gym is La Jolla Athletic Club. Call and see what it costs to join for a day. But if you do that you get free parking by having your ticket validated for three hours at the gym. If you decide to join the gym, choose the red button that says "Get ticket" when you enter the building. And then validate it in the gym. You have three hours. BUT you can always leave and the come right back in and get a new ticket and validate again since you have membership for the whole day!
Don't miss the COAST WALK which is ustt a bit up the hilll from the Cove.

This is one of the great parks of the world! triple the size of Central Park. 17 museums, San Diego Zoo, nature walks, restaurants and the Prado. over 100 years old....restaurants like the Prado are great....you could spend 3-4 days here.
