My Favorites restaurants in the neighbourhood

The place is full of history because it exists since the beginning of the 1900's. Today, the tradition of the French "bistrot" remaines very present and participates in the beauty of this restaurant. The set, authentic and bourgeois, is very delicious. And the service is really nice. The menu is generous and varied: there are 22 appetizers between 5.70 and 19 € and 20 dishes between 15 and 28 €! 21 ways are proposed to perfectly end a delicious meal with cheeses and sweets, between 4.60 and 14 € as the chocolate Charlotte with biscuits "Rose de Reims" with its vanilla sauce. 🕑 Everyday exept 24th December dinner. The kitchen is open from 12 to 0:30 from Monday to Saturday. Ⓜ️ Bastille / Ledru-Rollin 👛 40-55€/pers

Featured in Cedric Klapisch's 1996 film Chacun Cherche son Chat, which was shot on location in the neighbourhood, the Pause Café has managed to prolong its moment of glory thanks to its large terrace on the corner of rues Charonne and Keller. Inside, the modern salons benefit from a smattering of primary colours with ornately plastered ceilings and plenty of light. Having been immortalised on celluloid, the friendly staff occasionally let fame go to their heads: service can be excruciatingly slow at times. The food - French café fare with an Asian twist - is not bad, but you might be waiting for a while; best to order a well-mixed cocktail to pass the time. Opening hours: 8am-2am Mon-Sat; 9am-8pm Sun @timeout

A clean and simple modern restaurant with an open kitchen, Little Hanoï is a breath of fresh asian air. Delicately scented dishes arrive on your table still steaming, fresh out of the oven and free from MSG – huge salads, bo bun, pho, beef with onions and much more. There are some nice touches, like the mint leaves in the water carafe, and the excellent egg rolls and deep-fried prawns that can be ordered by the piece (€1 and €0.90), and dishes costs around €10, with rice and vegetables included. There is a price, however: patience. You can’t reserve, so you’ll may have to queue, locals love to go there :) Monday to saturday, lunch and diner

Artisanal pizzas and zingy cocktails ! On a corner of the progressively gastronomic rue de Charonne (also home to Clamato and Septime), Louie Louie’s midnight blue façade and soft lighting make it impossible to resist peeking through the window. But reservations are a must – even on weeknights. Once inside, it’s all sleek Scandinavian pine, copper and marble, with a small bar generating formidable cocktails: multiple gin and tonic blends in proper goblets, plus eight original concoctions and a nightly special – which on our visit involved bacon-infused mezcal and cumin syrup. It’s an ambitious offering and involves many of the same ingredients as the pizzas (think olive oil and black pepper,) but it seems to work. The Ska Maria Pastora (gin, St. Germain, ginger syrup and egg white) has the frothiness of a Pina Colada with the flavours of a cleansing juice, and goes down all too easily. As for pizzas, their selection is impressive, if not overwhelming (expect to quiz the wait staff on ingredients) yet the classics are just as well executed as the more unusual. A thin-based, pillowy-crusted Margherita comes with Fior di Latte and San Marzano tomato sauce, while the Capo dei Capi (€16): slices of spicy Spianata sausage, topped with grilled peppers, n’duja and burrata is a tantalising balance between piquante and creamy. No wonder all the tables on our row ordered it.

the ‘clamato’, by the way, is a spicy bouillon of clams and tomatoes. Though the prices are relatively high and the portions not all that generous, the quality and freshness of the produce the kitchen uses – all responsibly sourced – generally make up for it. Depending on the season, you might enjoy things like wild Belle Corde n°3 oysters with Tabasco (€17), some delightful Quiberon barnacles in a punchy lemongrass vinaigrette (€15) or a gorgeously silky fillet of haddock served with asparagus and a ‘red miso’ (€13). Bring up a stool to the industrial-style bar and pair your plates with a glass of dry white wine, like the P’tit Coin de Paradis (Allobroges 2014 Lucas, €7 a glass) or a fantastic Saint-Veran (2015 Perraud, €7). Despite the prices, it’s a worthwhile stop. Address: 80 rue de Charonne Paris 75011 Opening hours: Wed-Fri 7pm-11pm; Sat, Sun 12noon-11pm Metro: Charonne

The Faubourg Saint-Antoine area has been making waves on the food scene for quite a while: Rue de Cotte, Rue Trousseau, the Marché d’Aligre and lots of other little streets offer an excellent range of good things to eat, and since the Rue Charonne's latest makeover, the area is more than ever on the up. Graphic arts bookshops and trendy boutiques proliferate, so it’s no surprise to fine Bertrand Grébaut’s latest restaurat venture here. A former pupil at Penninghen design school, the décor reflects his background: huge mirrors, industrial installations, antique flooring and furniture, reinforced concrete and bare wood, all designed by Julien Cohen & Co. The cooking is direct, pure, and serious. Raw horse mackerel with yoghurt and red cabbage was superb, as invigorating as the velouté of eggs, mushrooms and chicken foie gras was comforting. Saint-Jean mackerel with sweet and padron peppers was perfectly cooked, Iberico ham and pumpkin was tender and delicious. Dessert was a lovely mixture of apples, fromage blanc, honey and thyme. It's all topped off with charming service and a lunch menu at €26 including a glass of wine (when we visited, Romorantin 2010 by Frantz Saumon or an Argentinean Malbec, Amalaya 2009). @Timeout 🕑 Opening hours: Mon 8pm-10.30pm; Tue-Sat 12.30pm-2pm, 8pm-10.30pm 👛 Evening menu at €55 Ⓜ️ Métro : Faidherbe - Chaligny, Ledru-Rollin ou Charonne

An Italian trattoria serving marvelously authentic Neapolitan cuisine This Neapolitan-style trattoria had established itself as a neighbourhood favourite on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine. And with its casual no-reservations policy and warm, mostly Italian staff, it’s no wonder. Tables are hard to come by, so it’s best to arrive early. If you’re not able to secure one, the long granite counter, with its view on the preparations, is a companionable alternative. Start things off right with a Spritz (sparkling white wine, seltzer, Campari) and copious antipasti (a meal in itself). Bruschetta are around €8 and the fresh, homemade pastas, served in copper pans, are 12€ and up. Pizzas range from €9-15, with a metre-long version for heftier appetites (€22). Salads are from €8-15. East Mamma’s products are all imported, so have that authentic tang of Italy as you sip regional wines and feast on San Daniele prosciutto, creamy burrata and fresh ricotta di bufala served with honey and bresaola. The desserts (around €7) do nothing to shatter this illusion: things like panna cotta with a splash of Grappa or ‘il tigramisu‘ made with lemon, banana and speculoos spiced biscuit. Address: 133 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine 11e Paris Opening hours: Everyday 12noon-midnightTransport: Metro: Ledru-Rollin Price: Around €30 per person

With its Parisian bistro allure, this tiny Italian restaurant offering classic transalpine cuisine is nothing if not convivial. Sugared olives and charcuterie 'du pays' are served by Italian waiters who move the chalkboard from table to table across the tiled floors. The solid menu offers all you would expect: fish or pasta of the day with a choice of sauce, veal escalope, gorgonzola tagliatelle. We appreciated that the warm herb bread was served throughout the meal. I love this place ! The food is the style of cooking that gave France its culinary reputation. The wines are indeed fine and the service is good without being stuffy or intrusive. It is not cheap but you will have value for money. The terrace, on sunny evenings, is fantastic as it is next to a parc so on it isquiet
