Holidays in Kritinia

I feel quite lucky to live in this island and extremely proud of my origins from this small village. There are various places that I enjoy with my friends and family and I would be happy to introduce those to you. Kritina is one of the most beautiful villages of Rhodes, built on a hill and has a panoramic view overlooking the surrounding forests, the sea and the medieval castle, thanks to which it has gained a great reputation and tourist interest. Except for the castle, in the village you can see the folklore museum and visit the chapel of Agios Ioannis with 16th-century frescoes. You can also visit the monastery of Amartos (unpaved road- rewarding view) which is outside the village at a distance of 4 km. In the village square you can enjoy the view, drink your coffee or taste a delicious souvlaki. Kritina is the village of Althaemenis. In Greek mythology, Katreas was one of the four sons that King Minoas (King of Crete) and Pasiphay had. Katreas succeeded his father as King of Crete. However, an oracle tortured him. The oracle said he would die from the hand of one of his children (Aeropi, Klymeni, Apimosini and Althaemenis). He did not reveal this oracle to his children, however Altheimenis was informed of that, so on his own decision he left Crete and settled in Rhodes, where he founded the city of Kritinia (New Crete). Historical studies say that during Ottoman occupation, a group of families from Crete abandoned the island and settled in Kritinia and later in the villages of Emponas and Mandriko were founded. The dialect that is spoken in these villages, their traditional costumes, their music, their dances and their last names are similar to Cretans’ and seems to reveal their Cretan origins.
The route up there is fantastic and it is easily accessible by car. The imposing castle, built in a distinctive strategic position, is surrounded by trees and the location is ideal to enjoy a wonderful sunset and take beautiful pictures. Beyond the outer wall, there is no special interest in it, but the view to the sea and island Chalki is unique!

Amartos is located on the western road of the island on the main road from Kritinia to Siana, between mountains and valleys stands the Holy Monastery dating from the Middle Ages. Its name was probably taken from a French nobleman Amarto who had a tower there and still exists in semi-ruined condition. Near the steep hill there is a small cave, the Agiopetra, where the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary was found. Holy water drips from a rock. It is miraculous for mental and physical illnesses.

Places to visit near Kritinia

24 km from Kritinia. In the village of Salakos there is a wonderful path in the pine trees and cypresses to reach Profitis Ilias. The Mount of Prophet Elias is at an altitude of 700 meters and was named after the Monastery of Prophet Elias. When the Italians captured the Dodecanese on 5 May 1912, they began the reconstruction of the island. So in the 1930s they created the village of Campo Ciaro in Eleousa and the two enchanting hotels "Elafos" in 1929 and "Elafina" in 1932 or "Cervo e Cerna" in Italian with a Tyrol western chalet architecture. These hotels improved in 1950. The area of Prophitis Ilias was full of forests where thousands of deer lived.

Embona 9km from Kritinia The village of Embona may not be characterized by scenic architectural beauty, yet it is one of the most popular choices for a stroll in the mainland of the island. At your visit to the largest winery of the village, you can take part in the guided tour as well as try various wines. There are also 3 more traditional wineries in the area, which belong to local producers where you can taste the local varieties and, of course, souma, a local strong alcoholic drink like.

Siana 15 km from Kritinia This village is built amphitheatrically on the slope of Mount Akramytis, south of the city of Rhodes and south-east of Monolithos. From there, guests can enjoy the magnificent views of the coast of Rhodes and the neighboring islands. Around the island

Prasonisi 58 km from Kritinia Prasonisi is the southern cape of Rhodes. Strange creation of nature, during winter is an island and in summer ... peninsula! The beach is sandy and large, on both sides of the strip linking Prasonisi with the rest of Rhodes, less than 500 meters in length. Because the beach on each side has different wave behaviors have been given two names "Wave" and "Flat". From the "Wave" side of the strip, the wave usually has a height of 1-2 meters and a steady direction, 2-3 meters ("good days" for the surfers,) reaches 3-4 m in winter. In the “Flat” part you can swim and enjoy the sun.

In the area thrives a rare kind of plane tree that favors the attraction of butterflies, as a substance in its crust acts like a magnet. Visit the Natural History Museum to admire the butterfly hatchery showcase as well as samples of the flora and fauna of this unique habitat.

Filerimos is a hill 267m. high, overlooking the small town of Ialyssos and the bay of Ixia and Trianda. From its top you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Aegean with turquoise waters near the shore and deep blue as it stretches toward coast of the Asia Minor. Thickly planned with cypresses, pines and other trees, it is an ideal location for a long walk into the Rhodian nature. A winding road leads to the top of the hill where, in relatively wide plateau, the Monastery of Filerimos is located. This place is also an important archeological site; here once stood the Acropolis of the ancient town of Ialyssos with an important temple dedicated to Athena Polias.

Since the antiquity the area of Kalithea (Καλλιθέα) was known for its thermal, therapeutic springs. In 1927, under the administration of Mario Lago, a systematic study of the waters was initiated headed by Gustavo Gasperini, his son Carlo and Enea Brunetti (who later became the of the director of Terme di Calitea). The study concluded that the water had a range of important properties and proposed the development of the area with the creation of a Thermal Spa Institution that would function in accordance to the stringiest health requirements of the time. Today Kalithea Springs is considered as one of the most distinctive landmarks on the island of Rhodes. Although the spa is no longer in operation, this fabulous building and unique architectural monument, surrounded by palms and pine trees, has been recently restored, converted to dinning and cafe facilities.
