Mahahual is a beautiful small town on the Mexican Caribbean coast that has built up its tourism around weekly cruise liner arrival. The cruise ship dock is to the south and does not overshadow the lovely quaint town. Vendors share colorful wares, and restaurants line the boardwalk with delicious food and brews. It is about a 2 hour drive from the house, or one can catch a collectivo van that goes by on the highway about 9:30 a.m. from south to north.

Ancient Mayan ruins a little north of Chetumal, about a 30 minute drive from the house. Taxis in the Chetumal area will also carry you up there. Feels like walking through an ancient Mayan city but you're in the middle of the jungle. Some of the structures are Spanish, made with the same stones as earlier Mayan pyramids.

There are several sailing operations in Bacalar, this is one of our favorites. We like the people who run it and the boat captains. It is approx. $42 per trip per person. There are sailboats on the Xul-ha section of the Laguna - we have not yet learned if they are public and how to access.

Water Healers from around the world gather around the Laguna Bacalar, teaching, learning and sharing their gifts. One of the leaders in this movement is Sol Naciente, a Janzu master. We highly enjoy transformational, deeply relaxing sessions with him, and going through his 2 week training.

JOVENA'S & ANGEL'S: Turn right at front of house. Walk up 2 blocks, take a right and go just beyond 1 block. On the left is a double store with produce on the left and dry goods on the right. This is a family operation of several generations. Jovena is the mother who is very friendly and sits behind counter in the dry goods store. She trades off with one of her sons here. The produce store to the left is run by Angel, another son and his wife. A very enjoyable and well stocked place to shop.

HARDWARE: HARDWARE: Go right in front of house and walk up 2 blocks (toward highway). Turn right - continue on that street another 3 blocks. On the right you will see the open faced hardware store just past a colorful mural called Zapata's Sombrero. The hardware is well stocked. We used to think Home Depot in Chetumal was the place, but we've learned most things needed for our village life are right here at this hardware store, locally run and owned.

Take a right and you will find Obet's on the left. He speaks very good English. This is a family run store. Salomon is the father (a wonderful widower who would love to find a Gringa wife). He makes daily trips to Chetumal and keeps the store stocked for Obet and family to run. Salomon also has a farm that produces bananas. Another son runs a very nice little taco restaurant on the way into Chetumal.

FRESH TORTILLA FACTORY: When facing street from house, walk up 1/2 block west towards the highway. Follow the little street to the right that crosses in 1/2 block a bridge. Cross the bridge and walk another block. You will dead end into the Tortilla Factory across the street. It is owned by a great guy named Raymond, who lived in the states for a while and speaks good English (though not everyone there does). He drives around town on a motorcycle with a cooler on the back, delivering hot tortillas to the tiendas (shops) and home deliveries. It is fascinating to see the tortilla factory in action! Access to Laguna Bacalar Xul-ha

PUBLIC LAGUNA ACCESS: When standing in front of house go 1/2 block south. You will see a short hill down to left with public laguna Bacalar access. We swim here daily with enjoyable temperatures year around. There will commonly be no one to a few families and friends enjoying the water also. A very precious place. The water is deep here as the laguna is fed all around by mother springs. We have foam noodles available for those who need them. PRIVATE ACCESS: Our next door neighbor has a beautiful gated area on the laguna. If you prefer privacy we can arrange for you to access via his property at $50 pesos per person per day. BALNEARIO EJIDAL is the main town laguna access, full of people and local color in season. It is 4-5 blocks north of us, street ends into balneario.
