Botanical Garden -Trg Marka Marulića 9 -Running parallel to the railway tracks, the Botanical Gardens form the southern part of the green belt known as Lenuci’s Horseshoe. -Every spring since the late 19th century the gardens have opened their gates to the public. Pride of the gardens is the collection of 10,000 or more plant species, ranging from exotic imports to indigenous Croatian plants.

Walking paths, lakes with boating facilities, numerous restaurants and, beach cafés, comprise the many attractions which bring people to the Jarun Centre for all kinds of reasons. Among the lush greenery, close to the clear water of the lakes and beaches which fill on hot summer days, there are also cycling paths, jogging tracks, a mini-golf course. The lake itself contains one of the best rowing lanes in Europe and has been used for international competitions. -Every June, Jarun even hosts Zagreb’s major annual rock music festival (InMusic Festival), running over two days. But quickly afterward, it is given back over those who just wish to relax, away from the demands of the city.

In winter they can use the snowboarding and ski training facilities, or take advantage of the twice-weekly night skiing programme - Some prefer to come in summer, when they can find shelter from the heat, and come to Sljeme for a walk and a picnic. Many love Sljeme in autumn, which brings out its carpet of colors; or spring, when the lower and surrounding slopes, named Medvednica, display many of the extensive (and occasionally rare) flora in full bloom. -The entire mountainside of Medvednica is yet another treasure of nature. Some 20 years ago, its higher western section was declared a nature reserve. In addition to the many trekking paths, a natural attraction is Veternica Cave, one of the largest in Croatia. Medvedgrad itself is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Croatia.

Then the whole area was transformed into an English type garden, with waterfalls, exotic plants, and decorative statues. At the moment it has only two monuments, Shame by Antun Augustinčić, and the monument to Croatian poet Ivan Goran Kovačić.

Bishop of Djakovo, Slavonia, political party leader and founder of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, Strossmayer had a huge influence on events while Croatia was still a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. He used the income from his episcopal estates to fund other important projects. His promenade was designed in the mid 19th century, only named after him some years later. -Visitors can soak in the view of central Zagreb in the company of poet Antun Gustav Matoš (1873-1914), whose statue sits on a bench beside Strossmayer Promenade. -The shortest tram ride takes you from Tomićeva St. in Lower town to the Lotrščak Tower in Upper town.

Your first impression will be of a green and floral promenade – this is where art lovers flock in droves. -Your attention is soon drawn to the pretty flowerbeds and water fountains, and to the appearance of a meteorological station. Since 1884 weather conditions have been recorded on the meteorological pole here. It was a present to the city of Zagreb by Adolf Holzer, a physician. You can stand next to the marble post and check the temperature and air pressure and coordinate your watch with a 24-hour dial. -In the heart of Zrinjevac, there stands the Music Pavilion which has served as an open-air concert stage since the 19th century. -The first fountain in Zagreb was built shortly after the opening of the Zagreb waterworks in 1878. It was designed by architect Herman Bollé and serves as a great place to find refreshment during hot summer days. Because of its swelling, organic shape, the fountain is popularly known as “The Mushroom”.
