There are also many shops surrounding this park, so it's a close place to take care of business. We have used the bicycle shop, had keys copied, had copies made, bought a weed-eater...you get the idea!

Sightseeing
This beautiful building houses government offices and also presents the history of the Maya in beautiful and large mural paintings by the artist Fernando Castro Pacheco, depicting the struggles of the Maya people and the coming of the Spaniards to the Yucatán. It faces the Plaza Grande, so it is easy to spot. Definitely a top spot for learning about the history and culture of the Yucatán.

Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán
This beautiful building houses government offices and also presents the history of the Maya in beautiful and large mural paintings by the artist Fernando Castro Pacheco, depicting the struggles of the Maya people and the coming of the Spaniards to the Yucatán. It faces the Plaza Grande, so it is easy to spot. Definitely a top spot for learning about the history and culture of the Yucatán.
On the Sunday bicycle route (Biciruta) you will come to Monumento a la Patria, created by famous Columbian sculptor Rómulo Rozo. It includes 300 hand-carved figures that tell the story of Mexico and is a great photo-op. If one were to bike the entire round-trip bicycle route quickly with no stops or sight seeing, the route could be accomplished in 30 to 40 minutes. We take a leisurely couple of hours stopping for coffee or ice cream and perusing the wares of vendors in the various parks. On Paseo de Montejo many local artists display their work for sale.

The magnificent Catedral de San Ildefonso is a beautiful, large and impressive cathedral situated on the east side of the Plaza Grande (Calle 60 between 61 and 63).

This is the grand plaza at the center of Merida. Here you will find the magnificent Catedral de San Ildelfonso, lovely gardens, vendors and shops, and frequent cultural events. The Casa Montejo museum highlights the original home of the founder of Merida.

Neighborhoods
The area surrounding the park of La Ermita de Santa Isabel is an authentic neighborhood just a 5-minute walk from La Casa Relajante. The park welcomes you with a gazebo and lots of shade. The streets surrounding the park are cobblestoned and take you past colorful homes. Across the street from the park is a bread store (panaderia) where you can get fresh-from-the-oven french bread (pan frances) but it is only open early in the morning and again at 6:00 at night, when the bread comes fresh out of the oven. Also across the street is Barrio Vivo, a hostel and kombuchería, with live music Sunday evenings.

In the heat of the day it will be deserted, but as the sun goes down and the air starts to cool, locals flock to this park for sports, socializing, a bite to eat, even a Zumba class. On the corner of Calle 77 and Calle 70 is the very popular Loncheria Poderosa for a bite to eat or fresh juice (dinner only). Across the street from the Loncheria is a place for an after dinner ice cream.
