COFFEEEEE

I love my Coffee. You can Google "coffee" and wonder if there is something wrong with your maps because in the Spokane area, you can't throw a rock without hitting one. You could go to the big box guys BUT you really shoud experience LOCAL coffee. I leave a sample of local beans for you to try at the cottage as a teaser!
Ladder Coffee Roasters
13105 E Sprague Ave
WALKABLE, they have a good roast. One of the local preferred roasts, they have a distinctive red telephone booth design.

I got hooked on those in the hospital, but his one became my favorite. They are the only one that serves a "chorizo breakfast burrito" (It is not true chorizo, but it makes my tastebuds happy!) They make each cup is very consistent. Theirs are generally Medium Roast and not nearly as bitter/sharp compared to the Starbucks dark roast.

VALLEY MALL - My personal favorite, I got hooked while working at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center ... they had THREE Thomas Hammers on campus! They also have decent selection of eats, this Mall location is heavier on the sweets since there is a Food Court nearby.

A rare quiet coffee place! It's a good place to meet friends when you want that quiet chat. Great treat for those with hearing problems! Their back room is my favorite and their lattes are quite tastey with specialty pastries. Near the beautiful Spokane County Courthouse & Kendal Yards (across the river from Riverfront Park)

Do you like the beans we provided? This is likely where we picked them up! A wonderful, classic coffee house that uses Indaba coffee roasters, they have a good selection of food & pastries. The Garden also has the distinctive mission to stop Human Trafficking and help those rescued from it. They are associated with HRC, a second-hand store that is only a few blocks away from the Cottage.

Food - Spokane Valley Favorites

My favorites that are worth driving a short distance.
My favorite place for BahnMi Sandwiches and Pho and anything with Grilled Pork, but especially the noodles! Tastes just like the streets in Vietnam. They don't serve BahnMi unless they have the right bread, and they go all the way to Seattle for it.

This Valley tradition looks like it would still smell of old cigarettes & spilled beer, but it doesn't! Good place to watch sports. (cheer local!) Decent choices on tap. Steaks are nicely done, but I generally go when I am craving Beer Batter Fish & Chips or Beer Battered Onion Rings. Rueben Sandwich is always great (so big!) or the French Dip. If you are into that sort of thing, I have heard the Liver & Onions are good. Family friendly - free popcorn.

Definitely my favorite for Hot Wings. They have some of the hottest in the area, but also the tastiest and the usual ability to order the level of heat you prefer. Given a choice between this and Buffalo Wild Wings (which I do like), I will choose Flamin' Joe's every time. Oh, and they have plenty of screens for whatever event you want to watch, nice for people looking for Futball from back home.

Wandering Around

A short drive to a number of places to walk around. Many are good for simply slow-driving through when the weather isn't the best.
Some of the best walking is along the Spokane River using the Centennial Trail. This paved path for walking & biking runs 63 miles! From northern Idaho through Spokane Valley and then beyond the westside of Spokane proper. Numerous areas are available to park and access the trail, no park fees except when Riverside State Park (another place many recommend). My favorite spots vary depending on my mood. What type of landscape do I want to see? How much shade do I want? Am I carrying a bottle of water for that longer stretch or will I need bathrooms? And do I need a Crispy Cream donut at the beginning or end of the walk? Check this link to the Regional Bike Map: https://srtc.maps.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?useExisting=1

A whole neighborhood of early 1900's homes & apartments. Worth driving thru and check out the small eateries nearby. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (the MAC) is in this neck of the woods with fairly impressive rotating exhibits. Safe walking in the area changes quickly within a few blocks, I don't recommend at night unless you are with a local.

Yes, this is yet another link that will take you to Manito park, but take the time to walk the neighborhoods or drive up & down random streets. This area was all built between 1875 to 1930s and the architecture is the signature piece of Spokane. Don't miss this! Even if you can only stop in one area of the park and the surrounding neighborhood, or even if you can only drive thru on your way back to the airport - make the time!

The hippest, purpose-built, urban renewal project that is working ... at least inside its environs. The West Central neighborhood it abuts is still not safe to walk at night. However, there are restaurants, a kids hands on science & art place, one of the local ice cream favorites "Brain-Freeze", and during the summer many evenings have live music on the street. Enjoy!

Appleway Trail - Spokane Valley, WA Flat, straight paved pathway for walking, wheelchairs, bicycling. Well marked & traffic lights at crosswalks, this 5 mile stretches between Spokane Valley City Hall and Liberty Lake. Go an extra mile or so into Liberty and you will be at the public park & beach! Sightseeing

Created from repurposed mill land for the 1974 World's Fair, Spokane has recently updated everything in the park. The walking is spectacular. It is a tradition to take new visitors to the Lufft Carousel at least once! There are trails going everywhere (part of the Centennial Trail complex). Your scavenger hunt should include: SO MANY things to do: Ice Ribbon for skating in winter, Splash pad & fountains during summer, walking bridges over the falls, the Pavillion (originally covered in canvas), the Clocktower (traditional proof you were in Spokane), and the Gondola ride over the river, naturalized areas, numerous historic references to the transition from native Americans to the present. Downtown shopping can be done at the

Spring time is the best to see the many varieties of this flowering shrub that Spokane gets it's nickname from. Then look up "The Lilac Parade" to be part of a Spokane Tradition.

Place to play

This is a great place to take the kids & let them run. Look for Discovery Park (playground toys), Mirabeau Springs (artificial waterfall), and Mirabeau Point Park (huge picnic area with frisbee golf). Paved trails connect them all. Grade school kids will love the portion of the Centennial trail across the road - the rocks by the river are great and you feel like you're on an Adventure. Near YMCA & Center Place Event Center (as with any natural park that is public, be aware of homeless that may be camping nearby, don't leave valuables out & lock the car to avoid petty theft)

One of the larger exercise & activity centers in the area is so close! In addition to exercise equipment, there are large indoor pools (one for exercise, one for play includes water slides), a 3+ story climbing wall (classes for all ages), an numerous classes.

Sit under the shelter or the nearby trees and let your kids run! This is just one corner of the signature park for Spokane. There is an outdoor sandwich shop just up the hill toward the Rose Gardens during the summer. And check out Rockwood Bakery for coffee, pastries, and sandwiches just a couple blocks away.

Exercise

A no-frills chain but again recommended by my fellow local exercise enthusiasts.

Food - Walkable

There aren't a host of options that are walkable, most are far enough afield that it is preferable to drive. These are the few I would be willing to skip the car to get to. NOTE: Spokanites tend to feel anything longer than a quarter-mile away might kill us. And wait at a crosswalk on a busy street? pshaaaww
This burger chain lives up to the standards of the franchise. One of the local go-to's for burgers, it is a walkable distance but is across the busiest intersection in the area.

Lucky enough to have one of the good Mexican restaurants nearby. I will qualify that it is a "traditional American style Mexican Restaurant". De Leon foods is more true Mexican home cooking.

This one is one of the furthest away and across TWO streets of the busiest intersection in the area. BUT ... I would walk if you made me. Because it's good food. They also have a large grocery section where you can find things not carried elsewhere. They are known in town for fresh, homemade tortillas that are also available for purchase.
