Sightseeing
I recommend the New Central Library the architecture by Snohetta and its popularity with Calgarians. The presence of reasonable franchise cafes and for being open 7 days a week. I recommend the library for the Elders' Guidance Circle with elders teaching who are very welcoming to drop in visits.
I also recommend the library as a starting point for two possible walking afternoons:
1) To the West from the library, you get to City Hall, Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall, Canada Olympic Square, the Glenbow Museum and Contemporary Calgary at 701 11 St SW, the Calgary. Avatamsaka Monastery at 10th Street and across the river the Kensington historic neighborhood.
North and East leads to Prince's Island walking and Cafes along the river, St Patrick's Island, the Inglewood the Zoo, Fort Calgary, the Esker Foundation Contemporary Arts, and independent shops, restaurants and cafes on 9th Ave SE.

Peacocks wander around out of cages. The conservatory and butterflies are awesome. The hippos love their keeper. She tosses apples in their pool and they dive in and bob for them.
Who doesn't like island parks in rivers? Plus there's an osprey nesting on top of the sculpture at the western tip of the island.

1) The permanent collection. I have a soft spot for this. It is has the settler perspective of settlement, much of it in slightly Impressionistic late 19th century style, canoes in the mist, heroic conversions of prairie to fertile farms, the mountains, the wildlife, the First Nations.
2) Niitsitapiisini - The Story of the Blackfoot People. The counter narrative in the same building in Blackfoot and English. There are incredible things here, winter counts including the first captured horse and first Smallpox epidemic, the medicinal botany, the teachings of cultural geography, the story robe of a hero, the history of assimilation projects such as residential schools that came with the newcomers, a deep Blackfoot perspective, pretty much up to the present.
3. A stupendously good gallery of 'capital H' historic South East Asian sculpture. Hindu deities, Gandhara and Mathura representations of the Buddha and, Tibetan tantric representations of mastered emotions.

The art is very reliably knock-you-socks off quality contemporary--often Canadian and touring cross country. On those rare times that it is hard to love the art, there's a very consoling grocery-cafe on the main floor.
It's that island. You know, the one where the folk festival is, Latino Fest, the families and kids, the geese and ducks and the warnings that they are wild animals and don't need any more bread, thank you! The toddler pool. People getting sunburned legs sitting on grass watching Shakespeare in the park
