Prepare to be transported back to gold rush-era California. Columbia State Historic Park is a living gold rush town featuring the largest single collection of existing gold rush-era structures in the state. You can enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a 19th century mining town, without the danger of raiding bandits or old-school gunslingers. Columbia’s streets are lines with shops and boutiques specializing in 19th century goods. There’s even a working blacksmiths where you can observe the traditional practices that helped the town function years ago. The impressive preservation of so many original buildings is a sight to be seen, and hopefully one that lasts for a long time yet.

Of the five gates into Yosemite, Tuolumne County’s Hetch Hetchy is the furthest north, and in a 2012 survey, only 50,000 visitors entered the park via this gate across a whole year, compared to the 24,000 daily visitors who entered Yosemite Valley in the same period. It is undoubtedly one of the jewels of the entire park, and the lower footfall means you’re able to enjoy it at its most serene. Ideal for hiking and wildlife spotting, the scenery constantly evolves as you move around the reservoir, revealing new views and landscapes as you progress. Fun fact: Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is the primary water source for San Francisco, and as such, you’re prohibited from entering the water. We were guided by conservationist Nate of Echo Adventure Cooperative, who was able to provide us safe passage in and out of the park while providing us with information on the history, geology and characters who have inhabited this valley over the years. To make the most of this experience, I would highly recommend recruiting a tour guide.

Food scene

For those like me who were raised in West Country cider territory, this certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted. Indigeny Reserve is an organic apple ranch and cider distillery, comprising a 160-acre reserve that boasts 11,000 granny smith and 7,000 honeycrisp trees. In my admittedly limited experience, that’s a lot of apple trees. A word of warning: if you go in expecting their cider to taste like your cider, you might be in for a little surprise. But if you can detach yourself from any fond memories of drinking cider as a youth, you’ll likely to enjoy this Californian cider experience a lot more – it was certainly a fun experience to explore the differences in production and learn about the emerging cider industry in the region. When you visit, you’ll have the option to explore their grounds via hiking and bike trails, bring your own picnic to enjoy and learn more about their sustainability and conservation efforts. Oh, and there’s a semi-secret gnome village in the forest…

Given the volume of outdoor activities on your doorstep here, it’s important to start each day with an energy-filled breakfast and there was no better place for it than Alicia’s Sugar Shack. With the friendliest staff and an obviously adoring community of hungry worshipers, Alicia’s gave us everything we needed and more. You’ll be greeted with an impressive range of homemade pastries, breakfast burritos, smoothie bowls, cakes, treats and coffee any which way you like it. It’s easy to understand why this little red-log cabin in the hills is so popular. An absolute highlight of the trip to Tuolumne County – prepare to fall in love.

On your way to Yosemite, you’ll pass through Groveland, one of the county’s gold rush towns. Along the main road, you’ll find the historical Iron Door Saloon – California’s oldest continually operating saloon. Inside, you’ll find an authentic experience that is unique to this part of the world, and it’s certainly worth stopping by for a drink on your way through, even if just to say you’ve been.
