Sightseeing

An extremely popular spot providing excellent views of the town. The Franklin Game Reserve forms part of the hill where everal types of big and small game can be seen in their natural habitat. It is extremely rare to find a nature reserve right in the heart of a city, making this a very special attraction. In addition to the natural fauna and flora to be discovered within, the hill is also a fantastic vantage point from which to enjoy breath-taking views of Bloemfontein and the Free State. Hamilton Park lies at the foot of Naval Hill and is home to one of the largest collection of orchids on the planet.

Art

If you’re touring the Free State, the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein is an absolute must. It’s situated in a striking neo-Cape Dutch building and features work by top South African artists and art exhibitions, all topped off with a superb restaurant and beautifully luscious gardens. The Oliewenhuis Art Museum may be called a “museum”, but it's really an art experience – gallery, restaurants, gardens and all!

History

Appeal Court The Appeal Court was completed in 1929 and serves as the highest court in South Africa. The stinkwood-panelled courtroom is probably the most magnificent in the country, while the judges library adds dignity to the already outstanding building. Bloemfontein has been South Africas judicial capital since 1910. Supreme Court The Supreme Court, opposite the Fire Station in President Brand Street, is the seat of the provincial court of law. The magnificent interior merits a visit. Civil, as well as criminal cases, from all over the Free State are heard here. It was built in 1909 at a cost of 60 000.
