Today the gardens are a popular retreat in the centre of Copenhagen, and are visited by an estimated 2.5 million people per year. Although the park has undergone several major changes, the three entrances have been preserved. Inside the park you will find the Hercules Pavillon, and the famous statue of Hans Christian Andersen. The gardens are home to a large herbaceous border, a rose-garden and a multitude of different-sized sculptures. In 2001 the garden acquired a new attraction, the symmetrical Renaissance garden Krumspringet, while for the amusement of children there is an artistic adventure playground which opened in 1998. In midsummer, there is a puppet show for children - the lawns are crowded with sun-worshipers on warm days and during Copenhagen Jazz Festival several bands can be heard playing within the area.

The bar is keen on the combo of sports and beer, so this is without a doubt one of the places to go to watch a game and have a pint of beer or two. All over the walls are big flat screen TVs, showing whatever sport you desire – just ask the bartender. The owner of Søernes Ølbar is Kim Christiansen, a successful restaurateur who also owns Ørsted Ølbar at Nørreport Station.

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is a must see in Copenhagen for anyone interested in art and architecture. Den Frie is one of the oldest venues for contemporary art in Denmark and one steeped in tradition. It is in itself a unique and very beautiful wooden building drawn by famous artist J.F. Willumsen. Den Frie was founded by artists in 1898 and from the beginning the artists themselves have been deciding, what was to be shown. Den Frie is the house of the artists and a site for the art of tomorrow. In 2014 the 100th anniversary of the relocation of Den Frie to its current location at Østerport is celebrated and at the same time the house is being expanded by a whole new level below the building.

Sightseeing

At Langelinje Pier you will find one of Copenhagen's most famous tourist attractions: The sculpture of The Little Mermaid. 23 August 2013 she turned 100 years old. Unveiled on 23 August 1913, The Little Mermaid was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and, perched on her rock in the water, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince. Fell in love Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the character after watching a ballet performance based on the fairy tale at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. The brewer was so captivated by both the fairy tale and the ballet that he commissioned the sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a sculpture of the mermaid. Inspired by a ballerina The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre. However, Ellen Price would not model in the nude for sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Thus Eriksen’s wife, Eline Eriksen, posed for the sculpture of The Little Mermaid. The headless mermaid The little mermaid has several times been the victim of vandalism. Twice she has lost her head, once the arm was sawn off, and several times she has had paint poured on her. But every time she is rescued and restored, so she can stay in her place by the water and bid travellers welcome to Copenhagen harbour.
