cottage town with some nice restaurants and a great sandy beach. There is swimming on the south side of the dam as well but use caution near the rocky outflow of the dam. You will see locals sliding in the waters there but major injuries and deaths have occurred. Below the rocky outflow is a small park with parking. The river is good for swimming here and this is a popular place for many to launch their canoes and kayaks to paddle down the Muskoka River towards High Falls in Bracebridge. There are 2 short portages around scenic chutes along the way. The main beach is the big family draw in Port Sydney.

Adventure

The Big East river is a sandy bottom river with sandy beach shorelines all along its route and great scenic views of massive sand cliffs along much of the river. Best access for a full day trip is from Williamsport Road on the east side of Arrowhead Provincial Park or from Dyer Memorial Road which is the first right turn off of Williamsport Road after you cross the river. Park near the big bend in the road and you can get into the river from there. For a shorter trip (half day) you can launch off of Arrowhead Park road near the highway or from the park itself. Parking here is either paid in the park and restricted by the highway. There is a small parking spot across highway 11 (west side) on Old North road with access to the river but you will have missed some great scenery at this point. You can paddle or tube flat down the big east. No rapids on this section and the water flows around 2 to 3.5 km per hour depending on the time of year. Faster in the spring. The river is great for swimming, sunbathing on sandy shores, picnics and sightseeing. The Big East exits into Lake Vernon about a half km from Hutchinson Beach. If you are tubing, make sure you have a paddle or other method to get you to the beach. You can park your pick up vehicle at Hutchinson Beach. You can access the Big East much higher up river, close to Algonquin Park by taking Limberlost Road (Muskoka Road 8) and then Billy Bear Road to where you will cross the river. At this point you are looking at a 2 or 3 day trip and some rapids and chutes with portages will be involved. The river is a Provincial Park at this point controlled by Arrowhead and there are camping spots. Check with Arrowhead for water conditions and river hazards to make sure you know where the portages are located.
