Beautiful forest and waterfall walks in this historic estate created in the 18th century by Thomas Johnes. There are several routes but our favourite is to descend from the main car park past Hafod church through the forest to the waterfalls, follow the course of the Ystwyth to the picnic area at the bottom of the valley, then follow the course of the river, ascend towards the site of the former mansion (destroyed sadly in the 1940s), up through the fields and back on to the return forest path to the car park. About two hours - more if you want a paddle en route.

Nature reserve just wouth of the Dovey Estuary with sand dunes and wonderful, huge beach - great for paddling, rockpooling, swimming in the beach lagoons for small children, wave-jumping for older kids. NB the beach is tidal with some cross-currents so take note of coastguard flags and stay within your depth at all times. A great beach for kite-flying, shell and pebble collecting, sandcastle-building and body-boarding. Please supervise young children at all times! Visitor Centre is open daily between 9am and 5pm during the summer.

Lovely woodland walk, all on the flat along the Ystwyth river. Nice and easy for young children.

The other major river of the area, the Rheidol is well worth a visit. There's a lovely local riding school at Cwm Rheidol, with pony trekking for all the family and an idyllic setting. The Magic of Life butterfly house is situated near the Cwm Rheidol Reservoir, near the visitor centre. If you continue along the lane you reach the Rheidol waterfalls, a lovely place for picnics and paddling.
