City/town information

Located 20 minutes drive from Alpine cubes. The town of Twizel was purpose-built in the 1960s to provide a home for workers involved with the Upper Waitaki Power Scheme. Today it is a well-positioned base for mountain climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, skiing, horse trekking and hiking. The peaks and trails of Mount Cook National Park are just up the road. You can fish for salmon and trout in the local rivers, canals and lakes. If you don’t have any luck, call into the salmon farm and buy a fish - fresh or smoked. In summer Twizel’s population more than trebles, as holiday houses and camp grounds fill to capacity. Functional facts: Approx. population 1020 The town is home to two medical centres, emergency services, a pharmacy, a community library, hairdressers, and an ANZ Bank branch. In Market Place you’ll also find a wide selection of shops, including two supermarkets, a hardware store, clothing and gift boutiques, and the country’s littlest bookshop. When it comes to food and drink, there is no shortage of choice. From traditional Kiwi pubs or boutique craft beer bars and eateries, to food trucks, fine-dining restaurants, and award-winning cafés, Twizel is home to a wide range of establishments that will satisfy any craving.

This dazzling peak, known to Māori as Aoraki or Cloud Piercer, is one of 28 mountains in this alpine backbone which peak at over 3,050 metres, and hundreds of others not far short of that all making up the famous Southern Alps. There are 10 short walks that begin near Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. All tracks are formed and well-marked. The Department of conservation have some great information on the walks. Search online. There are many other activities in Mount Cook which can also be discovered online, OR, just enjoy a day trip from Alpine cubes (approx. 40 minutes drive) for a stroll around the village and information centre.

Weather Updates

Keep updated with the weather report in the area. We have had some crazy weather this year with several snow falls, torrential rains and gale force winds. Its important to keep updated for your travels and your stay in the area. "Canterbury weather updates" are a reliable resource online to check in with the local weather forecasts.
