Marco's is the most well-known place to eat in Multnomah Village. The food is reliably delicious and the daily specials are innovative. There's something for everyone--meat-lover or vegetarian--and great options breakfast, lunch, dinner or in between. My daughter says the desserts are the big draw, so be sure to leave room. The decor includes a ceiling covered with one iconic Portland symbol--umbrellas!

Global flavors are what you get at funky Salvador Molly's. You can throw your peanut shells on the floor as you snack and decide between Carribbean, African, Latin American and other dishes from around the world. This place is never dull, and the variety of options is huge. My kids' favorite is the jambalaya, and I go for the fish tacos.

Portland has several chef schools, and after the students finish their training, most don’t want to leave, so they start gourmet food carts. Cart Culture is really hip in Portland, and some people spend a whole day or night cart hopping. There are over 500 food carts in Portland, some of which are stationary, and others which move. (You have to follow them on Twitter to know where they are on a given day.) Here’s a link to an article describing some of the biggest pods: http://www.travelportland.com/article/food-cart-pods/. Both Hillsdale and Multnomah Village have pods, so you don’t have to go far from our house to experience this phenomenon.

Peruvian tapas to die for. You'll want every plate and every cocktail on the menu. But restrain yourself--you must save room for dessert, which should include their Xocoatl drink (Mayan-style hot chocolate with alcohol). This is on the expensive side; it's a special occasion place. Reservations are also highly recommended if you don't want a long wait.

Wine tasting and music on the weekends. Not a wild spot, so no drunken customers to disturb your romantic moment.

O'Connor's books a fabulous mix of musicians, so if you are in town for a few nights there is bound to be a performer you like. The food is better than average for a bar scene. I love the hush puppies, and my husband thinks the burgers are great.

Parks & Nature

Just up the hill from the Rose Garden, Portland’s 5.5-acre Japanese Garden is composed of five distinct garden styles. Influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies, there is always “something more” in these compositions of stone, water, and plants than meets the eye. Three of the essential elements used to create a Japanese garden are stone, the “bones” of the landscape; water, the life-giving force; and plants, the tapestry of the four seasons. It’s inspirational in every season.

The best view of downtown Portland, plus you get to see why Portland is nicknamed “The City of Roses”. Thousands of varieties in a rainbow of colors are in bloom from June through November.

This is an oasis of calm in the middle of downtown Portland. The garden is extremely unique. It was built by 65 artisans from Suzhou, China and took 14 months to complete. The defining feature is the sculptural rocks--500 tons of rock, including Chinese scholars’ rocks from Lake Tai, were brought from China and used in the garden. Leave yourself plenty of time for contemplation, plus enjoy the unique blends available in the Tea House.

At 5,157 acres, Portland's Forest Park is the largest urban forest in the United States. With more than 80 miles of soft-surface trails, it stretches for more than seven miles along the eastern slope of the Tualatin Mountains, overlooking Northwest Portland and the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Fun fact: it was designed by the Olmstead brothers, who were sons of the designer of New York’s Central Park. If you take a long hike, feel free to reward yourself when you finish with a treat from the uber-French St. Honoré Bakery.

If you don’t have time to see both the Oregon Coast and the Columbia River Gorge, pick the gorge. My favorite itinerary has an initial stop at the Crown Point Vista House for an amazing view. Then you’ll follow the old Columbia River Highway to see some waterfalls. My guests stop at Wahkeenah Falls (that means “most beautiful” in the Yakama language), Multnomah Falls (the most visited tourist spot in Oregon), and Horsetail Falls (where you can sit in a cave and picnic behind the cascade of the waterfall).

An offshoot from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Portland Center Stage refurbished an old armory building to create a cool theater space. Their shows are always excellent, especially the musicals. You can get same-day tickets for $20 fifteen minutes before show time at the box office.
