Stroll alongside the Caribbean Sea, join in games of volleyball in parks and enjoy the music, bars and crowds that bring this boardwalk to life at night. Take your time on El Malecon, Spanish for “The Boardwalk,” to enjoy the street performers, food stalls, bars and restaurants that line this oceanfront entertainment precinct. The popular pedestrian zone runs alongside George Washington Street, which is famed for its palm tree-lined parks, fine-dining restaurants and lively bars. El Malecon runs along the picturesque Caribbean seaboard. Take a morning walk and watch the sun rise above a horizon filled with boats leaving and returning to port. Many locals start their morning exercising along the El Malecon pathway. In summer, find a mix of families and couples populating the sidewalk. Stop at one of the promenade’s park areas such as the Parque Eugenio María de Hostos, and join in a friendly game of volleyball. Buy ice cream from stands and let the kids play on one of the playgrounds along the boardwalk. Before evening falls, find a seaside café or bar to watch the changing colors of the sky. Restaurants along the boardwalk provide a wide range of food including traditional Dominican dishes and international cuisine. Try local specialties such as sancocho, a stew containing seven different types of meat, or mangú, a plaintain mash typically served for breakfast or dinner. When the sun has set, the boardwalk is lit up by the lights from bars and filled with the sound of music. Join the throngs of partygoers who come to drink in parks or pubs, listen to live music or test their own voice at one of many karaoke bars. You can even try your luck at blackjack or poker at the Majestic Casino in the west half of El Malecon. Remember to keep a close eye on your belongings at night, as petty theft can occur in large crowds. Visit El Malecon during Carnival in February to experience the excitement and color of the parades. The festival is known for its elaborate costumes and party atmosphere. Swimming off El Malecon is not recommended as the water in the center of the city is polluted. Get to the boulevard by taxi or bus and then work your way along on foot.

One of the Dominican Republic’s most established and beautiful tourist destinations, this beach offers all kinds of aquatic activities. Playa Dorada’s glorious white sands, clean waters and colorful reefs make this beach one of the most well-known tourist destinations on the island. The beach has different sections, with certain parts reserved for the patrons of nearby beachfront resorts, but other parts remain open to the general public. Sun yourself on the fine sands, go snorkeling off the shore and cool off by wading into the sea. With its pristine sands and soothing water, this beach is an ideal place to recharge. If you stay at one of the oceanfront resorts, avail of the sun loungers and umbrellas provided. Otherwise, bring a towel and stake out a spot on the sand away from the reserved sections. This beach is mostly frequented by families and couples staying at the luxury resorts that border it and the atmosphere is quiet and easy-going. Be sure to go for a swim while here. The gentle slope of the beach means the depth increases very gradually, making the waters safe for children. Rent flippers and snorkels to check out the coral beds, which can be found just off the shore. Schools of vivid tropical fish duck and dive around the pretty coral. For something more fast-paced, ask at the beach hut about what watersports you can participate in. Go kayaking or sailing or try out windsurfing or parasailing. After an exhilarating activity, reward your bravery with a drink back at one of the beachside bars at the far ends of the beach. Socialize with other bar patrons and linger to watch the sun set over the ocean. Playa Dorada is situated on the Dominican Republic’s north coast just south of the center of Puerto Plata. Several all-inclusive resorts are located along this beach. The beach is about a 10-minute drive or taxi ride from Puerto Plata. It can also be reached by riding in guaguas (private mini-vans).

Formerly used to ward off marauding pirates, this colonial defense structure now serves as a historical museum, offering superb bay views. Standing sturdy on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the 16th-century Fort San Felipe was perfectly placed to protect the colonial city from pirate invasions. These days, it is open to the public who come here to learn more about the structure’s role in Puerto Plata’s history. Check out old military artifacts, such as bayonets and cannonballs, and admire views out over the sea from this elevated vantage point. Fort San Felipe was built in the mid-16th century under orders from King Felipe II of Spain. It was designed to protect the region, which was an important silver and gold mining area, from pirates. During the brutal Trujillo dictatorship, it served as a prison and later opened as a museum in the 1960s, closing for renovations before reopening again in 1983. Before entering, take a moment to inspect the large stone fortress from outside. Notice how it contrasts with the other constructions in Puerto Plata, many of which are 19th-century Victorian-style houses. Go inside to explore the small museum. The exhibits trace the history of the fort and include old weaponry and colonial artifacts. Examine the thickness of the fort’s sturdy walls. These, together with the moat, helped keep invaders out of the fortress and prisoners inside it. Walk up the steps to the ramparts and spend a few minutes admiring the view from here, which extends over the coastline and the ocean. The grassy spot out in front of the fort is perfect for a rest. Don’t forget to stop by the restored white-and-yellow lighthouse also on the site. This lighthouse dates back to the late 19th century and stands 80-feet (24-meters) tall. Fort San Felipe is located on a peninsula at the western end of Avenida General Gregorio Luperón. Arrange to go there as part of a city tour or visit independently. There is an admission fee, which includes an audio tour and entrance to the lighthouse too. Check ahead to confirm opening hours.
