Local handmade chocolate & candy store with a rich history in a downtown Oswego location. In 1935 my grandparents, Ray and Gladys, started a candy business on West Seneca Street, making hard candy suckers. The broad smiling face suckers they called "The Man in the Moon" were sold wholesale throughout the state. With a hand press that would mold 3 at a time, they made 1000 suckers per day. The suckers were popular, but without the means to purchase more automated equipment, Ray and Gladys were unable to expand production and reluctantly closed the business. It was 10 years later, in 1946, that they were able to realize their dream to open a candy business and make it a success. Oddly, "The Man in the Moon" sucker was not made again, and the hand press was set aside, almost forgotten. It is an honor to carry on the candy making business, with many of the recipes my grandparents used up to 70 years ago. I use only quality products to make the finest candy in the tradition of a long-ago era. As a tribute to my grandparents, I have named my business Man in the Moon Candies, and like them, I have a dream of making quality candy for a new generation.

Visitors to Fort Ontario State Historic Site today will see the star-shaped fort dating to the early 1840's with 1863 to 1872 improvements. The fort is currently open to the public. There are two guardhouses, a powder magazine, a storehouse, enlisted men's barracks, an Army office building and unfurnished officer's quarters, videos, exhibits and windswept ramparts featuring magnificent views of Lake Ontario and underground stone casemates and galleries to tour. The fourth and current Fort Ontario is built on the ruins of three earlier fortifications which were the site of three French and Indian War and two War of 1812 battles. It was occupied by the U.S. Army through World War II. From 1944 to 1946 the fort served as the only refugee camp in the United States for mostly Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust under an Executive Order from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A post cemetery containing the graves of 77 officers, soldiers, women, and children who served at Fort Ontario in war and peace is situated on the grounds which are open year-round from dawn to dusk. In 1946 Fort Ontario was transferred to the State of New York and housed World War II veterans and their families until 1953. It opened as a state historic site in 1949. Dogs on leashes are permitted on the premises.

Viewable from the house is the West Pierhead Lighthouse. A brief history of the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse: The Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse was built to improve upon and replace the existing lights of Oswego Harbor in 1934. Still an active aid-to-navigation for Lake Ontario sailors, the Lighthouse is representative of the City of Oswego's rich maritime history, heritage, and culture. The Lighthouse was built as part of an extensive harbor enlargement project that involved the construction of new arrowhead breakwaters and enlarged anchorage. Designed by the Superintendent of Lighthouses, 10th District of Buffalo, NY in 1932-33, the Lighthouse was placed at the end of the new west-arrowhead breakwater nearly one-half miles offshore into Lake Ontario which required special engineering to withstand the high winds, heavy surf, and destructive ice common to the Lake. The St. Lawrence Seaway, completed in 1969, opened the Port of Oswego Authority to larger ocean-going freighters which further enhanced the need for continued and reliable aids-to-navigation. The lantern was automated in 1969 - ending the era of light-keeping as a profession in Oswego - and the original fourth order Fresnel Lens was removed and placed in the care of the Maritime Museum in 1995. Today, in partnership with the City of Oswego, the H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego serves as the steward of the iconic and historic station. Since 2012, our all-volunteer crew has worked tirelessly to restore the interior of the station, scheduled for completion in 2020. In 2018, the exterior of the Lighthouse was completely renovated above the caisson level. Tours to the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse: The H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego offers tours to the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse by boat. Tickets are $30 per person, $20 ages 5-10, and we can accommodate reservations of up to six people per transit to the station. Lighthouse boat tours are not recommended for children under 5 years of age. Visitors to the Lighthouse should plan to spend roughly two hours (including transit) for their experience and our captains reserve the right to cancel or cut-short any trip due to weather or safety concerns.

The Oswego Speedway, located in Oswego New York, was built in 1951 when original owners Harry, George and William Caruso converted the one time Wine Creek Horse Track into a 3/8 mile dirt auto racing facility. The track was paved during 1952 and remained a 3/8 mile track until 1961 when it was enlarged to its current 5/8 mile size. The Oswego Speedway has been a continuously run weekly race track since it opened in August of 1951. The Speedway is now in the hands of the Torrese family, which of course has a long time history as both owners and drivers at the Speedway. Brothers John and Eric helped the Speedway take on vast capital improvements in just one short year, including a new 20-position scoring pylon, ticket booth area, brand new main entrance, as well as totally renovated VIP booths high atop the grandstand area. Several sections of the Gary Witter Memorial rear grandstand have been updated, and the construction of the Oswego Speedway Tiki Bar and new novelty stand have been welcome additions to the Speedway since 2011. Oswego Speedway is mentioned in racing circles as the Indy of the East, as no fewer than a dozen past and present competitors have competed at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway including two time Indy 500 champion Gordon Johncock and 1969 500 champ Mario Andretti. Former Budweiser International Classic champions Bentley Warren, Joe Gosek, and Davey Hamilton have all competed at Indy in the 500. The biggest weekend of racing during the year at Oswego Speedway is Budweiser International Classic Weekend held annually on Labor Day Weekend. The weekend features the Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds, arguably the most famous open-wheel short track event in the country. The race began in 1957 and yearly brings together the best in open-wheel asphalt racing to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money and the right to be called "Classic Champion."

The water runs out of fountains, dolphins, fills up overhead and dumps on the kids below. A concession stand is also there for snacks. There is also a brand new playground just steps away in the park. A day of family fun!
The Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum, a memorial to suffering and the triumph of the human spirit, shows the history of the only shelter in the USA that housed Jewish refugees during WWII. In 1944, with the tide of the war turning the Allies’ way, President Franklin Roosevelt made a symbolic gesture. His Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes, sent Special Assistant Ruth Gruber to Italy to bring back nearly 1,000 war refugees to America. The 982 men, women and children had been specially selected for the trip to be brought over to Oswego by ship from Europe. Said Gruber, “The government officials making the selection chose families and survivors with skills that could help run a camp in America. The first priority was refugees who had been in concentration camps and escaped.” This small band of 982 had no legal right to be in America – except for President Roosevelt’s invitation.

This broad walk has fire pits, seating, a fountain at the end, along with electrical services for large boats & yachts to dock. Enjoy a stroll & amazing sunsets on this unique promenade alongside artists statues. Photo opportunities all around this amazing space!
