Food scene

Well, it would be rude not to, given its only 250 yards away from the cottage just above Porthcurnick Beach! Freshly cooked, locally sourced, seasonal food served and eaten in the fresh sea air. Feel a little smug you don’t have to fight for a parking space on the hill and enjoy this wonderful outdoor gem. Coffee and cake at 11, dahl or seafood chowder for lunch and brownies for tea, with maybe an ice cream in between. And a bit of exercise walking back up the hill to make it all eminently justifiable...

Simon Stallard's new venture in the village of Gerrans will not disappoint. Inside is cosy and snug with toasty fires and candle light. The garden hosts Simon's impressive outdoor kitchen and the chef's hub. Have pre-dinner drinks in the teepee or on warm days sit outside. The food is just outstanding. Book in advance! Dogs welcome.

Beaches

Porthbean is our neighbouring beach that is much less crowded than Porthcurnick Beach. On a sunny day the sea can be enticingly crystal clear and aquamarine blue, and on windy days can be wild and exhilarating. It is accessed via the Southwest Coast path which runs alongside the cottage, and you head left with the sea on your right-hand side as you walk. Please see our cottage brochure for a fantastic recommended circular walk.

Sightseeing

Park your car in St Mawes and take the passenger ferry to Falmouth. There is normally one per hour leaving from the harbour. You will take in all the sights of the Fal Estuary from the ferry before arriving in Falmouth: a vibrant town, rich in sea-faring history. In recent years it has been going through a regeneration with many independent restaurants and bars. The Falmouth Maritime Museum is well worth a visit.

It is very hard to have a holiday on the Roseland without getting on a ferry. The main ferry is the car chain ferry the King Harry Ferry, connecting the Peninsula to the mainland and avoiding the need for a 40-minute trip by car. It links to Trelissick Gardens, Feock, and Truro beyond. Other ferries help you access and discover the area much more easily, without the need for a car. From St Mawes you can reach Place, Falmouth and connecting ferries to the Helford River, Trelissick and Flushing. There is also a water taxi for more bespoke journeys. Falriver.co.uk

An absolutely stunning Church at the tip of the estuary - magical at any time but particularly at high tide. Legend has it that Jesus Christ visited St Just as a small boy with his tin trading Uncle and inspired the words of William Blake 'And did those feet in ancient times walk upon England's pastures green'. The grave stones are nestled in the lush tropical gardens - the most beautiful of resting places. Well worth a visit.
