Food Scene

Hands down the best sushi in town. Our favorite order includes a mixed yakimeshi with tampico, a large mixed teppanyaki appetizer, shrimp and cream cheese kushiages, and a nevadito roll with fried shrimp instead of salmon. Oh! And try the lichi sorbet, it's amazing!

Navíos is a somewhat upscale restaurant located right on the lagoon. And when I say on the lagoon I mean on it! Like literally, the whole restaurant is set on a set of beautiful palapas which sit out on the water and are interconnected with wooden bridges. The views are spectacular (at sunset in particular) and the food is nothing short of amazing!

Los Aguachiles is another amazing local seafood restaurant. They specialize in aguachiles which are a form of ceviche on a served with lots of thinly sliced-cucumber and particularly spicy and full of flavor. I recommend the mixed aguachile negro which is made with a black sauce similar to the one used for making "micheladas" if you're familiar with those.

This place started out as a local bakery shop, then expanded into a full-on traditional Mexican-food restaurant and now has multiple branches. We love going to this branch. It's traditionally decorated yet modern, and it really serves some amazing traditional Mexican food. I love their zucchini blossom quesadillas and their poblano pepper crepes!

This place is a great sea food option! From the outside it doesn't look like anything other than a local convenience store, but once you get to the back and climb up to the second floor there is a beautiful palapa-style restaurant right by the beach with great views and above all great sea food!

Drinks & Nightlife

Ok, so I cheated a little on this one. I selected this particular restaurant because it highlights the location well, but really this post is about La Ruta Náder, which is a downtown street that is super busy with lots and lots of trendy bars and restaurants. The street is Av. Carlos Náder, and you'll want to start walking from Av. Uxmal down towards Av. Coba. That's where most of the cool places are!

Sightseeing

This lookout is where the iconic "Cancun" sign is located. It also gives a great view of the Caribbean sea and it's beautiful white sandy beaches. This beach is on the side of the Cancun island which is not protected by Isla Mujeres, so the waves are a bit rougher than in most other beaches.

Parks & Nature

The Presidente hotel offers the.best.beach.in.all.of.Cancun. Only problem is, accessing it can be a bit tricky. Beaches are supposed to be public, but things aren't always perfect and hotels get away with a lot of tricky stuff. What we recommend is asking if the hotel is offering a day pass. Depending on demand and the season, they sometimes offer very reasonably priced day-passes and even offer to get the day-pass fee back in consumption at the bar and restaurants. If the day pass is available, it is highly recommended to go for it! Just one last thing, the ocean at this beach is particularly calm and has a nice shallow section, don't expect big waves but more of a relaxing beach experience

Arts & Culture

Ok, I'll confess, I've never been to this museum. But, all of my friends and family recommend it big time! So try it out and let me know if they were right.

Xoximilco offers a different experience from anything else you might experience in Cancun. It's inspired by the famous Mexico City Trajineras which essentially are flat boats that navigate slowly through canals as you party with your friends on them. The concept at Xoximilco is the same, except that you'll navigate through Cancún's mangrove, and the trajineras are designed to give you a taste of the different foods, drinks and cultures all around Mexico, not just Cancun

Shopping

Normally I wouldn't recommend this place since it's basically become a nasty tourist trap, so fair warning. However, it's probably still the easiest way to buy traditional souvenirs for you to remember Cancun or as gifts. Again, fair warning that this is a tourist trap and you'd do well to stay sharp and bargain for lower prices.

Plaza Malecón Americas is probably the most popular shopping center in Cancún. And it also features our favorite cinema branch, Cinépolis VIP, where you'll find reasonable prices for a remarkably high-end movie experience featuring large leather recliners, waiter service, drinks, and a wide selection of foods including sushi.

La Isla is another wonderful shopping center. It's outdoors mostly and it's a bit touristy, but it makes up for it with stunning views since it's right by the lagoon and a great vibe. It features a nice boardwalk by the lagoon with a variety of restaurants ranging from Hooters all the way to the very classy Thai Lounge
