Karaköy ("Black Village" in Turkish), the modern name for the old Galata, is a commercial quarter in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey, located at the northern part of the Golden Horn mouth on the European side of Bosphorus. Karaköy is one of the oldest and most historic districts of the city, and is today an important commercial center and transport hub. It is connected with the surrounding neighborhoods by streets radiating out from Karaköy Square. The Galata Bridge links Karaköy to Eminönü to the southwest, Tersane Street links it to Azapkapı to the west, Voyvoda Street (Bankalar Caddesi) links it to Şişhane to the northwest, the steeply sloping Yüksek Kaldırım Street links it to Pera in the north, and Kemeraltı Street and Necatibey Street link it o Tophane to the northeast.
There is a new address for you in the Karaköy district, which is always alive with its moving cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. Because filled with buildings dating back the Ottoman era, boutiques of young fashion designers and bars in the streets Karaköy region are attractive every hour of the day.

Forget the touristy boats in Eminönü or the restaurants on the Galata Bridge selling second rate, bone filled, balik ekmek (fish bread), every time I come to Istanbul I head to this place many times for lunch. It's just one street back from the sea in Karaköy half way between the two Karaköy Güllüoğlu shops (ideal for the best baklava and tea after). Blink and you will miss it! Just 5 small tables behind the griddle where you can watch the magic happen and a few soft drinks but the main attraction are the most delicious fish wraps. Don't expect fast food - you cannot rush perfection as Mehmet Usta removes all the bones and uses a mixture of about 20 ingredients, salads, herbs, spices and oils to make a mini masterpiece every time! Been going for two years and every now and then he will change something (fresh pomegranate or different tomatoes) so it always worth coming back for another one.

A cosy small quite place serving the BEST burgers in Istanbul. They have rich menu of burger varieties , moreover there are 2 types of burger not on the menu, they are gourmet lamb burgers. I had the Mexican Burger which contains the burger , cheese sticks , onion rings, French fries and soft drink for just only 28 liras. That burger is mouthwatering. The great thing is you don't smell the frying odors because the kitchen is upstairs. I also had a welcoming chat with the owner there , for sure that adds a human factor to the success formula.

A hidden gem to have drinks in a cozy place in one of the most crowded streets of Istanbul. We arrived here following our pension recommendation. Nice patio with lemons and soft light and very complete menu of drinks and food. Super friendly staff and very good service. The cocktails were amazingly tasty and cheap. Dont miss the place if you are in the neighbourhood.

There are two ways to walk up to the Galata Tower from Karakoy Tram Station: One is to follow the pedestrian traffic and ascend an uninviting steep staircase close to the tram way; the other is to take the more picturesque Kamondo (Camondo) steps on Bankalar Caddesi. Neo-Baroque and early Art Nouveau styles were fused here in the 1870s to create this curvaceous thoroughfare up one of Istanbul’s steepest hills. Abraham Salomon Camondo, of the wealthy Sephardic Jewish Camondo family, funded the construction. He inherited the banking and business success of his forefathers and went on to become the prime banker for the Ottoman Empire in the district of Galata where the stairs are located.

This building was constructed in the fifteenth century during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II, the same sultan who sieged and conquered Constantinople in 1453. Its first use was as a place to manufacture cannons and their ammunition for the Ottoman army and navy. As a matter of fact, this ancient harbourside suburb received the name of “Top hane”(“cannon foundry”) after this building and it became the area where the Ottoman military industry established its production. This old cannon-ball casting factory was rebuilt shortly after the big Firuz Agha fire in 1823, which leveled the former structure. During the twentieth century this barracks served a number of purposes: as a training space, an education centre and a military museum. In 1992, Tophane-i Amire was transferred to the nearby Mimar Sinan University, a state university of fine artsThe university converted it into a multi-purpose space consisting of three exhibition halls: the Tophane-i Amire Beş Kubbe, the Tophane-i Amire Tek Kubbe and the Tophane-i Amire Sarnıçlar.

Galata Bridge is the heart of Istanbul, spanning the Golden Horn from Karaköy on the north to Old Istanbul, centered on Sultanahmet, on the south. Crossing the bridge you look west toward Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and Asia. Right at the northern end is Karaköy (Galata), a Genoese colony during Byzantine times. It is said that Sultan Beyazid II commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a bridge to span the Golden Horn in 1503, only 50 years after the city was captured from the Byzantines. The great artist and engineer did the design, but alas the bridge was never built. The present Galata Bridge, built in 1992, replaced a much-loved pontoon bridge dating from 1912 that gently swayed and rolled as the seas moved beneath it. Passenger ferryboats leave from Karaköy for Haydarpasa Station (terminus for Asian/Anatolian trains) and the bedroom suburb of Kadiköy. At the southern end is Eminönü, with the Egyptian (Spice) Market, the New Mosque (Yeni Cami), and Sirkeci station (terminus for trains from Europe). Ferries depart the Eminönü docks for Üsküdar, the Bosphorus, and the Princes Islands. Car ferries cross the Bosphorus to Harem, between Üsküdar and Haydarpaşa.

The place, which was designed very stylishly and colorfully with its library and piano, has largely preserved the same decoration in its new style. The menu and entertainment style of the place has undergone a significant change. While the kitchen, which was formerly a Gastro Pub, turns into a modern tavern kitchen, entertainment is shaped by cabaret-style live shows.
