Val Chiusella things to do

Low level tourism, the valley offers all levels of mountain sport activities. Well known by the rock climbing community. High mountain routes connecting to the Val Champorcher and on to the Gran Paradiso National Park. For the big walks, Expert Mountaineers only - or with qualified Mountain Guide. Bus from Ivrea station direct to Traversella.

Brosso is an excellent start point for a full day walk of Monte Cavallaria. The paragliding club will also happily sell you a float down to valley bottom (Lessolo)

Trust them with their taster menu - they prefer to prepare and propose local, fresh mountain produce. I've never slept there.

Via Francigena: Want to walk from Canterbury to Rome? The Via Francigena (or Vie Francigene for Francophiles) passes through Ivrea. I suggest the train to Pont-Saint-Martin (15 minute ride) and walk back home (one day, if you get tired you can get the bus back). Please consult the definitive https://www.viefrancigene.org (Italian, English, French) and look for the Pont-St-Martin to Ivrea section. And of course explore other sections in the Aosta Valley and from Ivrea on to Pavia.

Aosta valley

with Gran Paradiso to the south, Mont Blanc to the west and Monte Rosa with the Matterhorn to the north. Aosta is boxed in on three sides with 4,000m peaks. The western Alps are primarily granite rock formations that do not lend well to create high volume tourist skiing areas. The ski and mountain holiday resorts of Courmayeur, La Thuile (linked with La Rosier in France), Champoluc and Gressoney (linked with Alagna in the Val Sesia) are all gems. Cervinia has amazing mountain and ski resources but unfortunately is a dump of a resort, think seriously of staying in Valtournenche if your objective is the Cervinia area. Pila and Champorcher are good day-trip destinations. Chamois and Torgnon are small ski areas but excellent for young family and first-time skiing experiences.
Iconic Alpine location, it is staggeringly beautiful - and expensive. BUT! Packing a pyjama and trainers in your backpack, if you take the day ticket for the Cervinia ski-area (or even the one-way ticket to Plateau Rosa).. you can ski all the way down (and walk when the snows are melting lower down) to Zermatt at the end of the day.. no charge! There are budget hostels to be found in Zermatt. Next day: this is the unavoidable expensive bit: day ticket skiing Zermatt (just the Theodulpass and/or Matterhorn ski paradise areas if you want to cut the costs more) and end-of-day ski back down to Cervinia again no need for Italian skipass as no lift required (choose your route carefully!). PASSPORT REQUIRED, sometimes they check on the border.

Best Ivrea ski hacks: Take the train to Aosta, walk out the back of Aosta station directly onto the primary Pila ski lift. There is no sun on the upper slopes until mid-February, it can be cold in January.

Stunning, rarely frequented, mountain park. Amazing routes almost zero accommodation. If you want to get away from humanity, this is a good place to start. Best info to be found on montavic.it
