Food / Drink / Music

A classic Belfast bar! Slightly out of the way from the busy town centre, this pub is my personal favourite. There are plenty of free music sessions throughout the week featuring Irish Traditional, Folk, and Songwriters. Upstairs bar regularly hosts events for various festivals. Great beer selection with rotating local brews. Very good food at very reasonable prices - everything is under £10.

Sister to the American Bar. Closer to the centre of town, but still out on it's own. Loads of great live music for free all week, occasional gigs put on upstairs. Has an outdoor area with a Pizza oven serving tasty and reasonably priced pizza. A great mix of people frequent this lively bar. Check their website for up to date listings.

A short bus journey, or 30 minute walk away. This arts centre regularly hosts some of the best concerts in the country. Set in a recently modernised church building, they also regularly host a 'Super Sunday' breakfast session, family friendly spot for a breakfast snack and some free live music. Check their website for the programme listings, but you'll be sure to find an amazing gig here. There is no bar, but you can bring your own along for the evening gigs!

On your doorstep

Beautiful public gardens that are free to access. There are a variety of hikes and trails all over the park, all of varying difficulty. Get to the top for panoramic views of the city. Visit the Belfast Castle grounds to spend time in the garden, or grab a bite to eat in the basement tavern (if the weather is good, ask if you can take the food outside to the garden). Adventurous playground has just been reopened and is a great spot for kids to play in a fenced off area. Picnic tables just beyond the castle are handy for a homemade lunch.

This popular North Belfast bar serves food all day, has regular live music, and can get quite lively on the weekends. It has a good drinks selection, plenty of outdoor seating, and some quieter booths inside. The best part is that it is 50 metres away so you can roll home happily...

Tiny coffee shop which roasts their own coffee in house. They usually have some really nice sandwiches and treats on offer too. You can get a bag of freshly ground coffee from them to take home.

Liikkuminen

The main public transport around town is by Bus, or Taxi

The Bus service throughout Northern Ireland is operated by Translink. Check the Translink website for timetables and special passes for families etc. You can pay for journeys on board the bus with contactless. Once you have made two journeys in one day, the rest of your jouneys that day are free. The main taxi provider is FonaCab - they have an app for booking taxis (similar to Uber), or can be phoned. Uber has also become more popular in recent years.

Be prepared for weather...

Irish weather is famously unpredictable. A sunny morning can quickly give way to a lunchtime downpour. Packing a light raincoat or umbrella is recommended. If you're visiting outside of the summer season and you don't want anything to hold you back, bring a really good waterproof coat, and walking boots that can handle the rain and mud!
