One of the most picturesque places in Rome, the only monumental square in the city centre without a church, Campo de' Fiori is located halfway between Piazza Navona and Piazza Farnese and represents the typical setting of old Rome. The colourful market that animates the square is one of the most characteristic of the city. Moved there from Piazza Navona in 1869, it owes its name to a wonderful flowery field where animals grazed until the 15th century.

Among the 20 things to see in Rome, we could not miss the masterpiece of contemporary architecture signed by Zaha Hadid, the MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, which transports Rome into the contemporary. Concrete, metal and glass together give life to a structure with fluid and sinuous lines, which seen from above recalls (and it is no coincidence) the bends of a river: a tribute to the Tiber, without which the Eternal City would not exist. Standing on the pre-existing site of a disused barracks in the Flaminio district, the museum has been carrying on the dialogue between past and future since 2010 with its important collections of contemporary art and architecture.

Also closely linked to the theme of water, other imposing architectures that cannot be missing from an itinerary in Rome are the thermal baths: the most authentic are the imposing Baths of Caracalla on the Aventine Hill, while the complex of the Baths of Diocletian on the Esquiline Hill is today presented with the addition of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri and the Carthusian cloister annex by Michelangelo in the mid-16th century.

Le Guide ai Quartieri

Trastevere is a characteristic and original neighbourhood with a bohemian atmosphere that has its roots in the working class for centuries. This district is starting to become more and more fashionable and even a bit 'hipster', but for now it still retains all its original charm. Here you will be (relatively) sheltered from the crowds as you discover its typical narrow, flower-filled streets. There are no particular historical monuments here as opposed to the rest of Rome, but you will discover a true 'Italian' neighbourhood with its inhabitants and local shops.

Bus and Trasports

Rome is a vast city, but fortunately the main sights are clustered in and around the historic centre. The best way to get there from Termini Station is to take Bus 64, the ticket costs 1.50 Euro and can be bought in any Tabaccaio, Newsagent or in some bars.

Il Cannone del Giannicolo

The Giannicolo cannon firing every day at noon is one of those traditions that all Romans hold in their hearts. A custom that began many years ago, as far back as 1847. The custom of marking time with a cannon shot was in fact introduced in the mid-1800s by Pope Pius IX, on 1 December 1847 to be precise, with the aim of having a single signal of the official time, instead of the disharmonious, not exactly coordinated sound of the bells of the Roman churches.

Saving on food

Of course, it is no mystery at all that food is one of the main costs of travelling. If the weather is pleasant, we therefore recommend eating a piece of focaccia on the fly or even ordering a take-away pizza to enjoy in a park. Sandwiches, sandwiches, piadinas and arancini are other inexpensive alternatives for lunch or dinner in the open air.

Saving on transport

Rome is a city that can be easily covered on foot and, unless you are far from the centre, we think it is not essential to use public transport. We recommend being very careful of taxi drivers, unfortunately many are dishonest and try to cheat tourists. We advise you to agree on a price before embarking on a ride. We offer a private transport service at an honest price. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Saving at the Colosseum

Rome? Colosseum As for the Colosseum, my advice is to buy your ticket online, preferring the early morning hours. The queues to enter can be very long indeed, not to mention the crowding you will find from mid-morning onwards. On the web you can find many websites where you can buy the Colosseum + Roman Forum cumulative ticket. However, it is important to be careful where you buy it. Almost everywhere on the web the ticket is sold at a price ranging from 18 to 22 euro.

Saving at the Vatican Museums

If you want to visit the Vatican Museums, which is a must because of their beauty, the advice is to buy your ticket online. You will thus be able to skip the very long queue that forms every day at the entrance. The ticket has to be made in advance on the official website and costs 17 euros to which you have to add 4 euros for the online booking fee. So you spend a bit more than if you do it directly on the spot but, on the other hand, you don't have to wait hours in line. Not everyone knows this but, at the Vatican Museums, you can enter completely free of charge every last Sunday of month.
