Local Shops

We are lucky to have an excellent local bus service operating a route right into the heart of York with Park & Ride number 2 bus that takes around 10 to 15 mins! Near the house is a beautiful lake in which to walk or fish, a country park for cycling or jogging, and some wonderful local shops, e.g., 'The JavaBar' for coffee and cake, a convenience store selling all the essentials that also has a free ATM inside the shop, a post office, Ocean's fish and chip shop, and a hairdresser all within a few minutes stroll of the house. Just a 10 minute stroll away and we have 'The Dormouse' pub, a restaurant pub serving good quality food, The Lysander, and The Mitre. Clifton Moor retail park is also within walking distance. It has a large supermarket, drive through takeaway food, a cinema, ten pin bowling. There is a gym and health club with pool nearby too.
Please visit the I Travel York Website for more information about about getting around in and around York.

Local Neighbourhood Walks

Rawcliffe Country Park is wonderful for a walk into the city centre where you will meet the River Ouse along the way as you approach the city centre.
It is nice for a breath of fresh air, a walk, a run, fishing in season, etc. To get to the lake, turn right out of the house and take 2nd right down Greystoke, and walk right to the end of the road where you will come to a little snicket to the lake.

York Attractions

We are just a 10 minute bus ride to the world famous, National Railway Museum, at approx 15 minute bus ride to York Minster and from there within walking distance of all the major attractions that York has to offer, and some of the less well known ones, e.g., Dick Turpin, the famous highwayman's, grave and St. Margaret Clitheroe's Shrine. York also has a number of guided walks around the City explaining its horrible yet fascinating history, and ghostly goings on!

Well worth a trip! As if the museum itself wasn't enough, the museum's gardens, simply known by locals as 'museum gardens' is very pretty. With St. Mary's Abbey, a ruined Benedictine Abbey as a back drop, you will amaze your friends with some pretty fanatastic photographs!

Visit the house and shrine dedicated to St. Margaret Clitherow, a once (extra)ordinary butcher's housewife in York, who protected RC Priests from persecution and taught children about the faith, during the reformation period. She was put to death for her activities on 25th March, 1586. Said to be heavily pregnant, a stone was placed beneath her back, her own front door was placed over her naked body, and stones weighted upon it until death. It was Good Friday and the Feast of the Annunciation. She prayed aloud but gave nothing away. There is a shrine to the martyr, St. Margaret also at St. Wilfred's Church, where several of my Aunties and Uncles married, near York Minster.

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval town house, once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the building was hidden under the relatively modern facade, only when it was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval structure discovered and its rich history uncovered. Walking Tours

Ask me about the walking tours. There are a few excellent ones. my guests like The Mad Alice Tour!
One, 'The Ghost Hunt' starts from The Golden Fleece Pub on Shambles at 7.30pm. Price £7.30pp. http://www.ghosthunt.co.uk/ 'The Original Ghost Walk of York' leaves nightly from The King's Arms Pub by Ouse Bridge at 8pm. Price £5.00pp. http://theoriginalghostwalkofyork.co.uk/ There is also 'The Bloody Tour of York' with 'MadAlice' that starts at 6 and 8pm from behind the Minster at St. Williams College, College Street, YO1 7JF. Price £7.50pp. RECOMMENDED https://www.thebloodytourofyork.co.uk/ Depending on how much you can cram in to your visit, you may be better off to purchase a York Pass, which gives you entrance to quite a few museums in and around York, e.g., Yorvik Viking Museum, The Castle Museum, etc. It also gives you entrance to The Captain Cook Museum in Whitby, and a free dinner at Ask Pizza. Note please that Ask in York is at the lavish, Georgian Assembly Rooms! More info here: https://yorkpass.com/how-it-works/ I also suggest pre booking your visit to the Yorvik Viking Museum if you decide to perhaps visit the Railway Museum first, which is on the bus route into the city centre from my house. https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/#1oXZ2a0fYFx774fs.97 The Railway Museum is well worth a visit! Lots of people miss it out as they believe they are not railway enthusiasts. Believe me when I say, it is a star of a museum and well worth a visit just to see Queen Victoria's royal carriage alone! It takes approx. 10-20 mins to get into the city centre. The bus stop is at East Cottages, a 5 min walk from my house. Turn left out of the house. Turn right down Northolme Drive. Turn left on Shipton Rd and walk down to the bus stop. Get a Number 2, Green Line bus, into town. This bus is frequent and runs every 10 mins or so. Get off at The Railway Museum for the Railway Museum and outside the Museum Gardens, home of the Yorkshire Museum and St Mary's Abbey, on Museum Street. From there you can see The York Minster, and all the sights and attractions of York are within easy walking distance. Coming back to the house, you will get the bus from Museum Street, either a number 2 or number 2 A. The last bus from Museum Street is at 10.45pm. I hope this all helps but if you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to help our guests.
