Entertainment & Activities

Going to an Icelandic swimming pool is a unique experience. Most of them are outdoor swimming pools and open all year round, so in the dead of winter, you’ll have to tiptoe barefoot and dripping wet across icy or snowy patches to move between hot tubs. Yes, visiting swimming pools is not an activity reserved for the Icelandic summer. For some, the best time to go swimming in Iceland is during a rainstorm or a blizzard. Two pools close by: Vesturbæjarlaug on Hofsvallagata and Sundhöllin on Barónsstígur close to the shopping street Laugavegur. Filled with geothermal water, the pools usually have one or two lap pools, at about 28°C and hot tubs at temperatures ranging from 38°C up to around 45°C. Most pools also have a steam room, and some have a dry Finnish sauna.

Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík is a junior collegelocated on Lækjargata - if you pass by. The school traces its origin to 1056, when a school was established in Skálholt, and it remains one of the oldest institutions in Iceland. The school was moved to Reykjavík in 1786, but poor housing conditions forced it to move again in 1805 to Bessastaðir near Reykjavík. In 1846 the school was moved to its current location, and a new building was erected for it in Reykjavík. This was the largest building in the country at the time and can be seen on the 500 Icelandic krona bill. It was used initially when Althing began to meet again in Reykjavík after a few years hiatus and thus it is in this building where Icelandic independence leader Jón Sigurðsson led the MPs in their famous phrase, "Vér mótmælum allir". The school has previously been known as "Lærði skólinn" (The Learned School), "Latínuskólinn" (The Latin School) and by the Latin title "Schola Reykjavicensis"; it received its present name in 1937.

Address: Aðalstræti 12, 101 Reykjavík The name of this restaurant gives a fairly big clue as to its culinary specialty—i.e., fish. But the market part of the name is equally important, since the kitchen espouses a commitment to fresh ingredients, which are usually purchased from local farmers and fishermen. Spread across two floors inside one of central Reykjavík’s oldest buildings, this smartly decorated spot is run by head chef Hrefna Rósa Sætran (part of the Icelandic National Culinary team), and serves not just fish and seafood but also meat and vegetarian dishes, all prepared in an open kitchen that boasts the country’s only robata grill. There is a separate raw bar serving up sushi and sashimi, and a surprisingly funky cocktail and craft beer menu.

Kattakaffihusid is Iceland's first cat cafe. We opened on March 1st 2018 but the first cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998 and they have since then been growing in popularity during the past 20 years. Cat cafes are very popular in Asia and have also opened in the US, Canada as well as in Europe during the past years. Our aim is to create a warm and cozy atmosphere where people can relax, enjoy good food and meet our cats. All our cats are up for adoption and live at the cafe while looking for a future home. Their safety and comfort is our main priority and we want them to feel at home while living with us and the rules at the cafe and environment is created to secure just that. Address: Bergstaðastræti 10a, 101 Reykjavík As well as being a cat cafe we aspire to be a cozy and unique cafe for all cat and coffee lovers and hope all our guests feel at home and enjoy our cakes and other goodies while visiting us.
