Philz FINALLY came to the East coast. It's the best coffee I've ever had. My favorite is the Tantalizing Turkish Philz Way. It's a coffee with mint and cardamom (philz way just means medium cream and sugar).

Union Market has TOO many options. It's an indoor market that sometimes spills out into the street. Look it up on Yelp, it's amazing. I love the waffle place and Red Apron. There's also a Yoko Ono art piece on the side of it and an iconic street art piece on the other side.

It's a restaurant/venue for poetry and bookstore. It's cool, has lots of options, and a lot to look at. There are multiple locations too.

Rock Creek park is right behind the building! To access the miles and miles of trails go north on 16th street and turn right. You'll see signs for the park on the right that will take you down a grassy hill and under the 16th st bridge.

Essentials
You have to pay a 5 cent fee for each plastic bag you use at any store in DC. Feel free to use the reusable shopping bag of mine under the kitchen sink. A large portion of the "bag tax" goes to cleaning up the rivers surrounding DC.

Target has everything. In the same building are also a Marshalls (discounted clothing, usually name brand and housewares), Chick-Fil-A restaurant, and a shoe store.

Getting Around
There are fare card (SmarTrip card) purchase stations in the metro station. You can use the same SmarTrip card to ride the buses in DC. However, if you want to ride the bus be sure to have the card preloaded. I like riding the bus and metro equally. Both are pretty clean and reliable. THE METRO DOES NOT RUN ALL NIGHT. They've been changing the times but it usually shuts down after midnight. Check WMATA online to be sure. Don't trust googlemaps for late night trips. I recommend Uber or Lyft if you plan on being out past midnight. If you do the car sharing option on Uber (pool) or Lyft (line) then it's almost as cheap as the metro usually.
