Splendid villas open to the public grace the area surrounding Bellagio and can be reached in a few minutes by car or, better, by boat. The villa now belongs to FAI, the Italian equivalent of the National Trust (a fund for the Preservation of the Environment) which maintains it in all splendour and opens it to the public every day except Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. from March 14th to November 15th.

The island, still little explored, has been in the enter of a turbulent and adventurous Middle Ages. It is found in the bay of the western coast of the Como side of the Lake Como that is between Argegno and the peninsula of Lavedo. The students call it "Pompei of the Lario" and are considered one of the more important archaeological areas of the Lombardy.

The gardens of Villa Carlotta chiefly owe their reputation to the rhododendrons’ and azaleas’ spring flowering, consisting of over 150 different sorts. But the gardens are worth to visit in every period of the year: old varieties of camellias, century old cedars and sequoias, huge planes and tropical plants. Some of the flowering plants are enormous and reach the exceptional height of 22 metres.
