Tomales Bay is a wetland of international significance that supports a diversity of habitats, including eelgrass beds, intertidal sand and mud flats, and salt and freshwater marshes. The bay is especially important to approximately 20,000 wintering shorebird, seabirds, and waterbirds. The waters of Tomales Bay are also important to many fish species; including salmon, eel, sturgeon, halibut, endangered Coho Salmon, and the commercially important Pacific Herring that rely on its creeks and extensive eelgrass beds to spawn. The bay also supports a resident harbor seal breeding population.

Right on Tomales Bay, Shell Beach is one of those secluded spots of quiet you don't want to yelp about, but because I love and care about you so much, here I am telling you about it.
Talk about a local spot -- the place makes Point Reyes seem like a thriving metropolis -- you can almost miss the road signs leading to it (the sign for Camino del Mar is in fact obstructed from one direction). But once you find the place and park, a short walking trail leads you into a very secluded stretch of beach, overlooking a gorgeous view of the water.
Bring a picnic, swim, explore a bit, but mostly just relax.

You walk 308 steps down to the lighthouse, and then 308 steps back up! Thank goodness for the incredible views & the rest stops! Once you reach the lighthouse, you can go inside, read the history and walk on the platform and enjoy the gorgeous view. It's a photographer's dream!
Make sure to dress warm if you visit during winter time.
