These caves are quite stunning to see and located not far from our Airbnb over the Bosnian border. Ideal activity for a rainy day or to escape the heat!

Situated in the neighbouring country of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Vjetrenica cave is a perfect place to admire the underground beauties of this area. Its entrance can be found near the village of Zavala, on the southern slopes of Popovo field, 45 km drive from Brsečine. With more than 7 km of channels, almost 2 of which are covered by a lighted pedestrian path, this cave hides numerous speleological features – four permanent water streams, small periodical lakes and many speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites and columns). More than 200 different animal species live in the cave, more than half of them being endemic ones which makes Vjetrenica one of the richest in the world in aspect of biodiversity. If you decide to visit this unique cave, be prepared for low temperatures; average annual being only 11 °C. In addition, the main entrance is known for strong wind that gave the cave its name (vjetar in Croatian means wind). Tip: near the entrance to the cave, you can find a great restaurant "Zavala", situated in the former railway station building, that serves traditional food of the area IMPORTANT INFO: since the cave is situated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, GPS can direct you to local border crossings that foreigners are usually forbidden to use. Since that often often varies, be sure to check with us which road to use to be sure to get there
