After Famous Artists: Jean Cocteau. The Villa Santo Sospir, decorated by frescos in 1950 by Jean Cocteau, and belonging to Mrs. Weisweller, opens its doors for guided visits with commentaries for lovers of art and history. The fireplace was the starting point for the first design by Jean Cocteau, which flooded the villa with frescos, mainly inspired by Greek mythology. In 1948 Alec Weisweiller bought her the estate, which was built in 1930, for his wife. Francine invited her good friend and the legendary designer Madeleine Castaing to work on the interiors. She was often called an eccentric decorator. Francine became part of the local scene, part of the social sceneand was a friend and client of Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. In 1949, Ms. Weisweiller met Jean Cocteau. He was shooting "Les Enfants Terribles", the movie being made of his famous novel. Francine invited the director to spend a vacation in her villa. Very soon the artist felt that he was tired of idleness. "I wither here," he told Francine and proposed to draw something above the fireplace in the living room. The first image turned out to be Apollo's head, the Greek god of music, poetry, and art. That is how Cocteau began painting the walls of the estate. Within a few months, the whole house was covered with drawings that Cocteau used to call "tattoos". He said: "I didn't have to dress the walls. I had to paint on their skin, that's why I treated the frescoes linearly, with few colors that enhanced the tattoos. Santo Sospir is a tattooed villa"

Une ambiance très particulière dans cette villa décorée par Cocteau. L'ancien infirmier de la propriétaire fait la visite et vous fait entrer dans l'intimité de ceux qui ont habité ce lieu. Un coup de coeur pour la terrasse où on se verrait bien un verre à la main!

La villa a été construite entre 1931 et 1935 dans le style régional méditerranéen. Elle compte quatre chambres et le mobilier a été acheté à Madeleine Castaing[2]. Francine Weisweiller fit la connaissance du poète Jean Cocteau lors du tournage du film tiré de son roman Les Enfants terribles par le jeune cinéaste Jean-Pierre Melville. L'actrice principale, Nicole Stéphane, est la cousine d’Alec Weisweiller et présenta Jean Cocteau à Francine Weisweiller. Elle invita en 1950 Jean Cocteau et son fils adoptif, Édouard Dermit, à passer quelques jours dans sa villa[3]. Pour s'occuper, Cocteau demanda à son hôtesse s'il pouvait dessiner une tête d'Apollon au-dessus d'une cheminée du salon. Il va y entreprendre sa première grande décoration murale et tatouer les murs, travail qu'il commente dans son court métrage La Villa Santo Sospir (1952)[2]. La villa est présente dans le film de Cocteau : Le Testament d'Orphée (1960) et dans le documentaire d'Edgardo Cozarinsky : Jean Cocteau, autoportrait d'un inconnu (1983) Jusqu'à la fin de sa vie, en 1963, Cocteau a fait de très longs séjours à la villa[2]. Carole Weisweiller, la fille de Francine, ouvre la villa à la visite, mais rattrapée par des problèmes fiscaux, doit la vendre. Un Russe l'achète, avec comme condition de poursuivre les visites au public, de faire des travaux de rénovation et de pouvoir y séjourner. Elle a également créé une association pour défendre la villa[2].
